Tiffany | 10 comments Hi All -

Sometime in the 1970s when I was in elementary school I read a book from the school library that I've been trying to track down. I was probably between 3rd - 6th grade when I read it, so it would have to have been first published before 1978.

The plot included a small group of kids (at least one boy and one girl) who discovered an elevator in their building that traveled back and forth in time - maybe back to late 1800s/early 1900s? I think they found a way to "call" the elevator by a button hidden in the hallway wainscoting. They also discovered that the elevator wouldn't always stop on the floor, or take them to the time they wanted.

If I remember correctly they used the time traveling elevator to change a past event... Maybe to solve a mystery or prevent a crime? I also remember them having a newspaper and when they were successful in whatever they were time traveling for, the newspaper's headline changed before their eyes, as a result of them changing history.

If anyone could help solve this book mystery I would be very appreciative!

Tiffany | 10 comments It's not Time at the Top, but thank you for the suggestion, WhiteHeather. :-)

Holly's suggestion of All in Good Time looks promising. Here's a quote from the Amazon preview: "There had been a front-page [newspaper] story about a bulldozer operator who had uncovered thousand of dollars in pre-Civil War gold coins... After the children found the treasure, they happened to look at the newspaper - and there was no longer any such story on the front page..."

Note this book has different cover images.
