hahahaaa...i know what you mean...got several books this month and then try and join in the group discussions....like you said, have to make a start :p
one of my current challenges is to read a book for every year of my life, so rounding up a few of those, two "Year Books" came today:1973: The Princess Bride
1978: Tales Of The City

I loved Tales of the City, Darren! A great guilty pleasure. I even read the last one (#9--I think it was the last one) a few years ago. Enjoy!

I purchased it recently but the latest reviews I read were quite mixed. I heard some people didn't like Ancillary Justice because they had trouble switching genders or embracing both genders at the same time, they thought it hindered the story because it asked too much mental work from the reader. It felt quite natural to me.
Enjoy your treat!

I adore that book. So much fun :)
One of my friends was giving away some old ARCs she had, so I said I'd take A Window Opens, The Palace of Illusions, and Our Lady Of The Forest. Looking forward to their arrival!

if there's one book I'd class as an "Instant Classic" it's Ancillary Justice
I've been reading sci-fi for 40 years and it blew me away
will be reading Ancillary Mercy any day now... :oD
Just got my books in the mail today. I picked up
,

Renee wrote: "Just got my books in the mail today. I picked up The Count of Monte Cristo, Jamaica Inn, Beloved, Japanese Tales of Mystery and..."what a monster haul!
hope you enjoy Beloved - one of my all-time faves
meanwhile I just placed an order on eBay for Victor Pelevin's The Sacred Book of the Werewolf but the ISBN has two alternative covers:
and
so the suspense mounts as to which I will get... ;o)
Picked up The Underground Railroad from the library. Starting after I finish Lady Chatterley's Lover.
Darren wrote: I just placed an order on eBay for Victor Pelevin's The Sacred Book of the Werewolf"Wow. That sounds... intriguingly odd. Or perhaps oddly intriguing.
I have just bought Treasure Island, and Gulliver's Travels. I'm looking forward to the reread of Gulliver's, it's been years! Treasure Island will be a first for me.
Darren wrote: " eBay for Victor Pelevin's The Sacred Book of the Werewolf ..."Have you read much of Pelevin before?
I've only read one by him and it was very, very odd. Even a year later I'm still not sure what to make of it.
Just wondering if all of his books are that strange.
Ashley wrote: "I have just bought Treasure Island, and Gulliver's Travels. I'm looking forward to the reread of Gulliver's, it's been years! Treasure Island will be a first for me."Treasure Island is one of all time ever favorite adventure stories. Recently brought the book for my son with wonderful illustrations by the illustrator Robert Ingpen. A good excuse for me to read it again
Karen I absolutely love sharing my early favorites with my daughter. I love a great adventure and so does she. I'm hoping Treasure Island does not disappoint. However, I don't think it will. I'm feeling rather excited about it.
Ashley wrote: "I have just bought Treasure Island, and Gulliver's Travels. I'm looking forward to the reread of Gulliver's, it's been years! Treasure Island will be a first for me."I tried to reread Treasure Island some years ago but couldn't get into it again.
Its my literary peanut butter, insanely into it for about a month as a child and havn't been able to touch it since :P .

not read any Pelevin before
got this title from the Guardian 1000 list - sounds right up my street!
Ashley wrote: "I have just bought Treasure Island, and Gulliver's Travels. I'm looking forward to the reread of Gulliver's, it's been years! Treasure Island will be a first for me."I have not read either, but was thinking of getting Treasure Island for my daughter to read. She's going on a field trip to see the play, and I thought she might want to read it before going. Don't know if she will though, since it might not be her kind of book, and she's not much of a reader, but then it will be around for me to read :)
Ordered Lorna Doone by R.D. Blackmore, Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell, The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas and Under the Greenwood Tree by Thomas Hardy. All classics! :)
I made a highly successful trip to my used bookstore yesterday. These were acquired.Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs
Her Every Fear by Peter Swanson
Family by J. California Cooper
Some Soul to Keep by J. California Cooper
and more.
Just got The Last Tram
(1991) by turkish author Nedim Gürsel and Land Under England
(1935) by Joseph O'Neill .Technically only cost 1 cent each :) , although with postage that was about €4.50 each :( , oh well.

I'm half way through the book, and so far I am really enjoying it. I recommend it! :-)

I have received a copy of
it was a Goodreads Giveaway. So far finding the story really interesting as its a part of history I am not familiar with at all.
Also very nice to get a free book in the post :)
Ashley wrote: "Hopefully these will not be a continuation of your "literary peanut butter"..."I don't think that analogy will work this time ;) , that applies to something i tried and loved for a short time and havn't been able to stomach since... hmmmm lets see.... jam?, marmite? oh..
I did recently try maple syrup for the first time and found it to be pretty flavourless so lets hope they won't be my 'literary maple syrup' :P .
I've recently bought the first three book of the Poldark series very cheap from Book Depository. They have such beautiful covers, I every so often gaze at them dreamily. :)
and
ok, really need to take back what I said about movie tie-ins!was scared to mention this until I actually got it in my hands (which I have now)

1958 Great Pan edition

pretty good condition too!
so happy :oD
Darren, I'm glad your book arrived and I'm good condition. I've never heard of it, but love old books like that. Nargus, that's quite a collection! I hope you enjoy them :)
Nargus - a cracking group of titles there! I'll be reading Wuthering Heights and Madame Bovary soon, and Perfume and The Plague in the "middle future" ;o)The Hunters is part of my "War" sub-category challenge this year - I wanted something from the Korean war and this is an acknowledged classic
Darren, I haven't hear of that one either, but it looks to be in great shape. I love finding old books, too!
Darren wrote: "The Hunters is part of my "..."That seems an awfully thin book but that's probably just the camera angle ;) . I do like a book with the price built into the cover, i have a copy of Dracula also worth 2'6, i think its from 1958.
Thats quite a difference between your cover and the one on the main link
doesn't really evoct the same does it :lol .
I was intending to buy a new copy of the Penguin Classics edition which has quite a classy cover:
but I just couldn't resist when I stumbled across such a "vintage" item!
Nargus , I loved The Plague and the Warership Down....And Piyangie I am reading The Black Tulip too. It is very different from Three Musketeers. But its not bad.

Thanks Pink! :) I know. Now to do justice to them, I'm not going to shelve them until I read them, which I hope to, soon.

Good to know! I haven't actually read anything by Camus but I've heard good things! I've also got The Outsider too. Keen.

I preferred The Outsider/The Stranger, to The Plague, which I didn't get on with at all. Looking back I wonder if the problem was with the translation I tried, though I can't remember who it was! I hope you have better luck :)
closure for those of you needing to know which of the alternative covers I received for The Sacred Book of the Werewolf ;o)it was this one:
ex-library (Hartlepool Borough), great condition in protective cover
pages thick stock, nearly square with wide margins
secretly this was the one I wanted :oD
