KARIN-----TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES is the novel that made me fall in love with Thomas Hardy forever! I was living in South Korea at the time, and it was difficult to find English books to buy at stores, and I found a copy of Tess at a market, buying it simply because I COULD read it; never expecting to find a new favorite author in the process! took that as an omen and bought it
jiffy bag with Leipzig return address waiting for me when I got in from work...

300 pages but heavy stock and thick cardboard cover - feels lovely/weighty in the hand
spine a bit "slanty" but I can work on that...

Thanks Loretta! Yes, I wanted to read the short story option but even the Kindle version was dearer than I'd normally pay which has been, in the past, not much more than £0.00. But Kindle - a dastardly £4.00 something! :p. I'm so looking forward to it as I've never read any Steinbeck before. Exciting... :-)

My granddaughter and I ordered (and received yesterday) The BFG and Little House in the Big Woods. So excited! I have tried reading Little Women with her, but we are moving so slow. She says she likes it, but doesn't ask for it much, so I am hoping these others will be more enjoyable for her. And there are pictures!

today went into charity shop and found brand new copy for 99p!


then when I got home, found waiting for me the third of the three books I bought myself with my birthday money

A sequel to The Three Musketeers that picks up the story immediately after the events of that book and was unfinished at the time of Dumas' death plus an unpublished novella that Dumas wrote that ties up all the loose ends of the book. It concerns the adventures of Richelieu--D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis aren't in this one.

Oh, so Steinbeck is dear in the US too, Melanti. His popularity must have held good over the years, but I find it a tad unexpected that his works continue to be relatively expensive in the UK and Ireland. My younger daughter is reading 'East of Eden' at the moment which is probably not unrelated to a movie she watched about 6 months ago.:D

No, this is not Twenty Years Later. This is the first English translation in over 100 years of The Red Sphinx, an unfinished, forgotten, Dumas novel. I don't know what it's French title is.

I was convinced I would hate it, but as it was a gift I felt obliged to read it. I was pleasantly surprised! 'The Kitchen God's Wife' might be next on that particular agenda! Hope that you enjoy!

Impressive photo of the Dumas, Squire. I confess that I took a pic of 'The Pearl' as it was newly arrived (well second-handedly really!) in the mail. Then the fun started. I wished to upload it on here, proudly! I was proud of my work and proud of my book! It would be a breeze: the photo was and is on my iPhone. Goodreads was and is on my iPhone. After the complex manoeuvres I went through to take a photo of the darling little book this was going to be like Spring Break. Yes, indeedy, and as we don't have this holiday in Ireland it did turn out to be an Irish Spring Break. It's a good hard-working holiday: scrubbing the doorsteps for 'Mammy', shoeing the horse for 'Daddy' - you know, all the usual sorts of pastimes ...

Frankenstein (Read it a while ago in high school, thought i should have a nice copy of it and reread hopefully soon)

The Blue Between Sky and Water (her first novel Mornings in Jenin affected me profoundly)

The Outsider (thought I should read some Camus, given I haven't yet)

What is history? by EH Carr (interested in the question and answer...)

So, basically, I'm going to have to find a way of reading books faster than I purchase them...

I feel for you. I can't begin to relate how many times that happened to me, especially when I was trying to fill in my missing volumes in Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion series. And it took me forever (it seemed) to get find a copy of The Quilt and Other Stories by Tayama Katai--which I finally did and used as my Asian Classic for Bingo.

Eventually, I started emailing sellers to make certain they actually had the books i was looking for, even though it was on their storefront page. Good luck with your continuing search.

Lot of good ones there, We is an interesting one. A bit on the vague side in its writing style but i really liked it.

It is a bit like 1984 but the interesting thing is that the serious dystopian films you could say 'oh thats like 1984' , Brazil, Metropolis, Brave New World etc. but a lot of the more crappy dystopias have more in common with We. Equilibrium, Aeon Flux, Logan's Run that sort of thing.

I have consoled myself by ordering 2 other books, so that my TBR pile should grow instead of shrink after the cancellation!

one of which I won't say what it is yet, for fear of jinxing it as well(!)

but the other arrived today:
Tim Krabbe's The vanishing - a novella originally published in Dutch in 1984 with the title "Het Gouden Ei" (The Golden Egg), which was then made into a superb film in 1988 (which is how I know about it!)
in 1993 there was a (pointless) Hollywood re-make of the film, but some good came of it because an English translation of the book was published as a tie-in (so I take back all my previous bad words about movie tie-in books!!) and it is this book that I unwrapped today :oD
Goodreads doesn't have the correct image/english description for the copy I've got, but the closest cover is this one:

I received a hardcover edition of What is History by EH Carr. However, the top appears to be stained by yellow spots :(. It's supposed to be new. It only the top of the book, so I wonder if it is because it was sitting on the shelf for ages.
Still it bugs me...
