Read the guidelines. If you live in Europe and they've stated "US preferred", you're unlikely to get the book for territory rights reasons.

Make sure the publishers can find the reviews you are writing - put the review on netgalley, goodreads, librarything, amazon etc. You dont HAVE to have a blog.

Netgalley have a recommended ratio of 80% books on your shelf having reviews, though it's not a hard rule. My ratio is currently 55% (has been as low as mid 40%) and I'm still getting books, in part (I think) because 55% of 198 is still over 100 reviews.

I actually wrote a blog post about this a few months ago, and includes some tips and advice. It can be found here:

hope you find it useful

I've never had a deadline with NetGalley. However, if you download the ePub version for Nook, those files have expiry dates (usually 50 some odd days or so). But if you have a Kindle, the files don't expire at all.

The problem with NetGalley is that most of the time, you need to be established with a blog or some regular website where you post your reviews. Even so, if you don't live in a major English-speaking country (US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand), they don't always give you approval because some books there don't have international rights. But you can start with books that are "read it now" meaning you don't need the publisher's okay to read the book. Mind you, those are usually not as high quality as the ones that you need approval for.

Davida Chazan (chocolatelady) There's also Library Thing's Early Reviewer page here http://www.librarything.com/er/list Again, you have to request the book and get approval.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 792 comments A lot of great recommendations of where to obtain free books in exchange for reviews. I would also like to point out here in Making Connections there is the ARR folders. Plenty of authors have generously made their books free in exchange for a review. Also for those who really just love to read and like to review books I'd suggest typing in a genre your interested in on Amazon and your bound to come across some freebies and also check out Kindle Free Days and all the bargain sites that offer books for free. These are people who are looking to get some downloads but for those interested in reading and reviewing you'd be helping the author out as well, sort of a win win.

Sherrie Miranda (sherriemiranda) | 64 comments Megan wrote: "Hello everyone,
I normally enjoy reading the book reviews on my to-be-read book list and books I plan to add to my list.
Megan,
If you have a publisher, they should have helped you get reviews BEFORE the book was out. Some who self-publish are able to do that, but I didn't realize how important that was until my book was out.
If you do ask for reviews here, you must always ask for "Honest Reviews." If Amazon finds too many connections between reviewer & author, they also may pull the review.
Best,
Sherrie
Thanks & back at you!

message 65: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie Miranda (sherriemiranda) | 64 comments It's usually an e-book. Hope you are ok with that.
I am still looking for reviews. If you'd like to review it, send me an e-mail to sherriemiranda1@aol.com. Let me know if you prefer a Mobi or PDF.

Do you provide free print copies in return for reviews?
I'm busy looking at the ARR and noticed most are doing eBooks. My book is not yet in eBook version

What kind of books are you wanting to review?

message 68: by Michael (new)

Michael Forester (michaelforester) Hi Megan
I would be delighted if you would read and review my book The Goblin Child which is on Netgalley under Pegasus House Publishing. If you apply in the normal way I will make sure you are approved

Megan I enjoy fiction, non fiction, mystery, thriller, memoir/biography, some young adult.

Michael Gill | 15 comments I have been active in the Give-Away program since joining Goodreads a few years ago. The problem is postage with a paperback. In Canada, its ridiculously expensive to post anything.
E books any format for all of my three full novels or two short stories. Please just ask. Honest reviews on GoodReads are all an Indie author likes to see.

Would you be interested in doing a review of a children's nature story? I have also just brought out a book promoting occupational therapy. It contains a lot of my work experience as a way to illustrate about the profession, so there is a little memoir in a way. Definitely non-fiction, health related. I would love reviews. If you are interested in either or both, please be in touch. I can send you the link if you would like to see more or you can see the books on my profile.

Thanks in advance
