ABANDONED. YA Fiction (Hating the Giving Tree)

In a ya fiction novel, two characters are in a library together and one of them is going over to the children's section to showcase their favorite book. The other character says something like "If you're getting the Giving Tree we can't be friends anymore."
Does anyone know what book this is from?

I just had to comment - are you sure this is a novel and not my daughter telling a true anecdote about her own life? ;-)

I will ask her if she recalls this book - it is definitely something she would remember. Do you know about when you read it (what year)?

For some reason I have no problem with The Giving Tree, though I certainly understand why other people do. It's The Rainbow Fish that I hate, what with its message of if you were born prettier than others you should rip off parts of your body and hand them out so people will like you.

No idea what your book is, I'm afraid. It sound like something from Chris Crutcher, but I don't think it is.
