Did you read the book in the 90s or later than that?

I hope you can help me. I dont have much detailed information though.
The book Im looking for is a childrens book, I think it was written befor the 1990ies, could be from around 1950-1990, Im really not sure.
In the book there are lots of strange fictional animals with beautiful hand-drawn-style, coloured illustrations and description of there life, habits and so on. But its not your average dragon-fairy-stuff but completly made up animals (I think I remember something resembling a spoon, but im not entirely sure). Im from Germany, but I think the book was in English.
And it might be possible, that the title of the book contained a name of someone and something with animals. So "-Insert name here-'s (encyclopedia of weird) animals" something like that. (didnt say the encyclopedia bit though. But maybe something similar to that.. And maybe Im being completely missleading here..
And it is possible, that for you english speaking people it is something really obvious, something you at first sight wouldnt consider because its so obvious, because it is very common to know that book in English-speaking countries, I can only say that it is not common in Germany.
thank you so much for your help!
