Two volumes, then one, then one

First this book was published in Norwegian in two volumes - 1991/1992:

Then an abridged translation into English - 1999:

Could a series be created for the first two-volume edition and then the two following, abridged editions be added to that series without a series number? I believe I've seen that done for other works.

A series can be created for the separate volumes. The later single-volume works should be combined with each other, and would be numbered as #1-2 in the series.

I suppose that would be the right solution. However confusing it might appear to English readers who didn't have the original two-volume edition.
