Jackie (quacko) | 13 comments I heard about this book- I wrote it down. I lost the paper- I really want to find it. It is about how an island evolves over many years where the population goes through racial changes from black to white and back again somehow...arggh.

Michele | 2488 comments Fiction or non-fiction? YA or adult? What is the setting -- does it start with "Then the earth cooled" or does it start more recently? Does anyone visit or leave the island, or is it totally isolated? Remember anything about specific characters?

Also, you might want to edit the title of your post to include some of these key words/concepts so as to catch people's attention.

Some things that might help people solve this: fiction or nonfiction? What genre? Is this a real island? Where is the island? Even if you can only remember vague things that still might help.

Jackie (quacko) | 13 comments The book is about an island where people change race back and forth through time. I believe it based on a real historical time, but may be fictionalized.

Jackie, about how old is the book?

These books are more of an FYI, in case you're interested.
Crystal Rain by Tobias S. Buckell
The Invisible Line: Three American Families and the Secret Journey from Black to White by Daniel J. Sharfstein

Jackie (quacko) | 13 comments Hi Kris-within the last 5 years- and yes, I am going to check out your suggestions. Thanks!

Michele | 2488 comments When you say "change race" do you mean between black and white? Over how many years does this change take place? Is there conflict between individuals who are at different stages in this change, or does it happen all at once, uniformly? What is the technology level of the people -- stone age, iron age, industrial? Remember anything about any of the characters? Does anyone come to or leave the island, or is it totally isolated?

Hi Michele- not sure of the exact time frame. It was over the last 150 years. It is a uniform change, It is not science fiction or fantasy. It is based on a real time event in a time and place. I do not believe there is total isolation. The crux of the book is that this is just a part of the place's history with its people. Nothing hysterical or dramatic.

Michele | 2488 comments Do they change more than once, like from white to black to white to black etc., or just once? If just once, what direction is the change (i.e., from what to what)?

message 11: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (quacko) | 13 comments The change is biological- the basis of the story is that about what happens when a place goes from being black to white and yes, back again or some variation. Being that it is over many generations, that is the story. This is why I wish I could find the book - saw someone had it and was discussing it at an African American theater I attend for a discussion about the history of a song that came from Africa and was sung by people that spoke Gullah in the south. This book came up as part of the discussion and I did not write it down... arggh. http://newsreel.org/video/THE-LANGUAG...

You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 176 where fewer eyes will see it. Get back in the game! Bump!
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!
