I am not going to do well at answering this but place was very important. I remember that very well. Here are some quotes I found on line that show how the author uses dwellings in her book;
The old house on the hill wore its steep, gabled roof pulled over its ears like a low hat. The walls, streaked with moss, had grown soft, and bulged a little with dampness that seeped up from the ground.
