Perfect excuse for a reread ;-). And I just asked the mods for a thread to be created for Six of Crows.

Oooookay. Brushing aside the whole "kids books are worthless" subtext, that was a bit... illogical. I don't think that's how buying habits work...

Edit: ooops sorry I didn't see the drop the subject bit till later. dropping it now.

Yes I remember smiling at some references from Grisha trilogy :) Grisha trilogy is good too but can't beat the Six of Crows. Everything is fast paced and deeper compared to Grisha.

I was part of "tangential topic ring" a few weeks ago... when we start these interesting side discussions, we can just create a thread over in Hodge Podge and continue them....

I created a topic just now for it: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I've just read a number of things that insist its better to read the Grisha trilogy first, so that's how I'm going to do it or else I'd feel like I was reading it wrong. I'm just weird like that. *shrugs*

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments Does anyone want to read Hollow World near the beginning of the year? I'm not extremely particular when, but would rather do it fairly soon.

I also have some middlegrade series that I want to get back to, if anyone is interested in buddy reading them. I'll be picking up the Fablehaven series with book two and the Ranger's Apprentice series with book five.

Timelord Iain | 35293 comments Mod
Did you guys see the cheatery we discovered with The Way of Kings? There's a Nook edition listed with 3159 pages because Nook measures pages as what fits on the screen... that's 7.9 bonus points from challenge and 15.8 bonus points from buddy read, on top of 31.6 regular points... for 55.3 points... I don't think that edition could count, but I'll leave that to the mods to decide... there's also a weird ebook edition with 2400 pages, then the mass market paperback has 1258 pages...

message 1926: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments Didn't we decide to go with the most popular edition of each book? That's also a good way to convert audiobooks.

I must have missed this decision... it will save time, tho if true...

It does kinda make all this work some of us did putting this reference together for all the Buddy Reads a waste, tho... and I would think Jenna would have stopped us for doing it wrong...

message 1928: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments I probably missed the decision or saw a suggestion and thought it was so. There are soooooo many threads in this group it's impossible to keep up...:)

Whatever y'all agree on should work though. That's a lot of work y'all did there..

message 1929: by Rea (new)

Rea Sanders (realauren89) | 42 comments @ Jenna, this is a common occurance with Sanderson novels and myself. WoK took me a year to read. WoR was a solid 48 hours of neglecting my entire life to read it in one go. Oathbringer is shaping up to be the reading slump of WoK. I love Stormlight Archive but sometimes they feel brickish to me.

I would be down whenever. I'm jumping head first into Malazan, and hoping to wrap up *fingers crossed* ASoFaI as well as WoT.

None of the mods except me have really been around, I'm leaning towards making it just the most popular edition because all of this is starting to become a big hassle when it doesn't need to be, but I'll get back to you on it.

I'd be fairly happy just going with whatever edition I'm actually reading. I'm really particular about shelving the right one! Haha.

I do totally understand using the longest one available to keep it fair, but like Iain said with WoK there are some crazy anomalies. I'll be reading that as two books, wonder what the page count is there...

message 1932: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35293 comments Mod
It'll suck having to re-do the reference list, but it will balance out on time saved in the future, I think...

and remove all the oddities we encountered from contention...

Now that we're in the thick of it, we are finding the problems with the system and ironing them out... save everything learned for if/when you guys choose to do this again (I assume this won't be an every year thing if you choose to repeat it... some people might find the competition stressful, especially towards the end, when holidays are keeping people busy elsewhere)

Hailee | 2762 comments Siobhan wrote: "...going with whatever edition I'm actually reading. I'm really particular about shelving the right one! ..."

I'm exactly the same about shelving the particular edition I am reading. In fact gone so far as to join the goodreads librarian group because several times the edition I own hasn't been there, is missing a cover or had an incorrect page count and so I've requested that it be corrected otherwise it drives me mad.

Yea... I'm a member of the Librarian Group, altho I don't use it much... I joined after reading the "prequel" to World of the Lupi by Eileen WIlks...

Turned out, it was actually an earlier version of the first book, published as a novella, with weird differences (like a pet cat instead of a dog) and made getting into the first book really hard...

I think so many people complained about the novella and getting warnings attached to it, that the book has been deleted from Goodreads now, because I can't find it anymore, and I used my review to warn people before the Librarians updated the blurb...

That's what I'm thinking and generally leaning towards because as buddy reads are added, we'll constantly be doing this. Still waiting to hear back from other mods, but don't put any more work into for now.

I need to do that too. My boyfriend reads a lot of old obscure books and he hates when his edition doesn't have the right cover photo or page count etc.

Maybe I just read too much, but if I kept everything accurate like that, I'd waste days more than I already do on Goodreads... I messed with it a bit the year I read 100,000 pages to try and get an accurate count, and changing editions when books had 0 pages listed... but I mostly just live with whichever edition comes up...

I know it bothers people a lot less. But if I didn't get the right edition every time there would be a constant niggle in my brain everytime i logged in and looked at my home page. Plus if the page count isn't correct I get the wrong total page count at the end of year stats. But yeah I only average about 40 books a year so I can see why you might not have the time to worry about each edition of the 1 million books you read a year 😂😁

message 1946: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (last edited Jan 03, 2018 01:29AM) (new)

Timelord Iain | 35293 comments Mod
I read 70,431 pages across 180 books this year +/- 1-2k pages... compared to 63,764 pages across 187 books last year (13 books aren't being counted because I didn't go back and fix them when multiple read dates were implemented... and 4 had no page number... so it's probably more like 68k pages across 200 books)...

So despite any small discrepencies, I know I met my goal of reading longer books in 2017... and that's good enough for me...

I'll be able to say tomorrow, once all my edition and review changes are recognized on the stats page...
