I already read Scorpio Races with CP awhile back, but Soo recommended Ashlords to me... Niki has also read and liked it... the blurb describes it as Red Rising meets the Scorpio Races... I haven't read Red Rising, but the cover with the fire horse looks interesting...

It doesn't need to be right away. I was thinking April or later. I've read it already, but was planning on rereading again, because it's such a beautiful book.

The more startling thing to me is that you haven’t read Red Rising yet...

Me?... my Fantasy credentials are lacking/sporadic... I tend to devour more UF/Mystery/Sci-fi/etc... slowdly remedying...

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7639 comments Mod
Haha nice. :) Its a lot more sci-fi than fantasy, hence my surprise. I think you’d get into it.

message 5265: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 3613 comments I agree, the Red Rising books are more sci-fi.

message 5266: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments I'd say Red Rising is sci-fi that's written like fantasy (with the world building and some of the tropes) I adore that trilogy.

message 5267: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8702 comments Red Rising 2 = the most boring thing I ever read. XD

I would try to join Scorpio Races if you end up planning it, but I don't want to commit because I don't own a copy yet. :)

message 5268: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 3613 comments Wow, I never considered any of the Red Rising books boring. I thought they were full of action. They kind of stressed me out, tbh. lol Well, I would say that maybe the first third or so of the first book was kind of slow but once it got to the academy part is when I got hooked.

It's always amazing how people can walk away with such different perceptions of the same books. :-)

message 5269: by Twila (new)

Twila | 142 comments Golden Son is a lot of people's favourite of the series, wow! But yeah, I too really love that saga. Book 5 is one of my favourite books ever. Extremely stressful! The author made me so mad, I wanted to physically fight him, lol!
It's probably my fave sci-fi series. I've wanted to read Ashlords solely because of the comparison :)

message 5270: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 3613 comments Golden Son is my favorite of the original trilogy, too! I read Iron Gold and I own Dark Age but I'm waiting to read it until the third book of second trilogy is out. I know I won't be able to stand having to wait.

message 5271: by Twila (new)

Twila | 142 comments Dark Age doesn't end with a cliffhanger, but I've really had a Red Rising shaped hole in my life since reading it 😭😭

message 5272: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8702 comments Haha sorry guys, I couldn't bear Golden Son! I think it had a lot to do with the audiobook narrator if that's any consolation. He put me to sleep! 😴😅
I haven't been able to bring myself to finish the trilogy yet.

message 5273: by Veronica (last edited Mar 10, 2020 12:04PM) (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 3613 comments No worries, Siobhan! Everyone's perception is valid. I'm super picky about audiobook narrators for just that reason, though. They can totally ruin a book that I might otherwise have enjoyed if I'd read it on my own. That's why I can never be one of those readers who do almost 100% of their reading via audiobook. *cough*Iain and Soo*cough* :-) If I don't like the narrator after 30 seconds of the audible sample, it's a no go for me.

@Twila - Good to know that here's no massive cliffhanger. The one at the end of Golden Son about did me in. Thank goodness I was reading well after the trilogy was complete. I feel badly for those who were reading as it was being published.

This is such convenient timing. I just bought these books the other day from the used bookstore. I love the covers!

I can work with any start date in May.

When in May would suit you? I can do any time but the 19th.

I don't have a copy also. I'm doubting between the library and my one. Maybe I'll order it. Give me a shout when you want to plan it, if you're interested.

message 5286: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi All,

I'm proposing to run an author supported buddy read in April 2020 for my new A Subtle Agency Omnibus collection of my first three books.

I've set up at Horror Aficionados (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... ) and Castle Dracula.

If there is local interest, we can open up a supported buddy read thread here as well.

Noting that the stories are - in essence - action, adventure thrillers set in a near future setting with science-fiction, fantasy and horror tropes.

Plus the book will be FREE on kindle from the 1st to the 5th April inclusive.

What say you?

Graeme Rodaughan Narilka wrote: "Looks like I free up in the second half of May if anyone is interested in a Subtle Agency buddy read."

Hi Narilka, and Peggy,

The Omnibus (books 1-3) will be free from 1st-5th April, and 0.99 for the rest of the month.

We can set an FBR buddy read for May, and if you would like, I'm happy to participate and answer questions, etc...

The omnibus ends 'open,' as the series continues, but the events at the end of book 3 are quite conclusive for a number of characters, and it's not a 'cliff-hanger,' in the narrative sense.

Assuming we like the first three we can extend to all 5. I checked Amazon and they're very reasonably priced if you aren't a KU subscriber (where they're free). They are also fairly short. How do you feel about one every two weeks starting 5/20? That works out to Book 1 on 5/20, book 2 on 6/3, book 3 on 6/17. And how do you feel about one thread for all 3 books?

It will be great to have you Graeme! This will be my first BR with the author joining along :)

that will be on my finale exams' date I'm not sure if I can read them after the third one, but I will try to read them on my break times 200 pages is not that much of a deal, a thread for all three would be fine assuming we don't need to come and ask for a thread every two week, and the time is reasonable, we can read other books between them!!!

message 5300: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Peggy, Narilka, does a start date of the 20th of May work for both of you?
