Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Rachel performs several black curses throughout the book. She ultimately comes to believe that using black magic for a good cause is justifiable. Thoughts.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments Rachel has always had a very definite white and black version of the world. More and more I see her being forced to acknowledge that there is a lot more gray in the world.

In their world, she gets a black stain every time she uses black magic so there's a consequence. It's a slippery slope because each time that line she crosses to justify it will keep moving. Her continued use of it is troublesome purely because she's the one judging the justifiable need.

Case in point, she went to save Jax and Nick. Once they found Jax, they could have stopped there and not used the curse. But she made the decision to continue to find the worthless Nick. Bet she regrets that now.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Yes, it is the shades of grey that Rachel gets stuck on.

I think I prefer the concept of magic in Harry Potter as being mostly neutral and the intention of the wielder determining whether it is light or dark (aside from the Unforgivable Curses).

That's a much clearer definition.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments The understanding of magic in this world is an ongoing thing. Rachel still has some things to figure out.

Good point, Veronica.

I felt the same way that she should of stopped right there once she saved Jax and not use the curse. Nick was just more problems and trouble in her life.
