Voting is now open!

The 2017 Reading Challenge will continue the concept of this year's challenge, with 52 weekly topics. Users then choose a book fitting each topic in order to complete the challenge.

The Process:
The topics for the 2017 RC list will be determined through around 13 mini-polls. Suggestions for each poll will be open until 20 suggestions are received and then opened up for voting for one week. Each user will vote for their top 4 and bottom 4 topics in each mini-poll, resulting in 4 challenge entries from each (13 polls x 4 topics/poll=52 weekly topics). This timeframe allows for a completed list in October-November.

The Rules:
- Voting ends June 30
- One vote per poll per user

Reminder of Current Challenge Themes:
- A book by an author you haven't read before
- A book in the middle of your TBR list
- A book from someone else's bookshelf
- A book with a strong female character
- A book from the Goodreads "Top 100 YA Books"
- A book from a category for another challenge
- A book that you've owned for a while but haven't gotten around to reading
- A book with an animal on the cover or in the title

Francesca | 780 comments I had a tough time picking a top 4. There were a lot of these suggestions that I would be happy with if they made it in. I didn't even have a bottom 4, I only had a bottom 2.

Katie | 2360 comments I'm totally with you, Francesca. There were 8 books that I legitimately wanted to choose & only 2 that were really on the bottom for me. I think this poll had a great mix of suggestions. Now the long task of waiting to see the results. I guess that's what happens when I happen to be online the minute the poll becomes available. Happy voting, y'all.

Sarah | 539 comments I liked almost all the ones for this poll. It was hard to pick just my top 4. So even if the 4 I picked don't make it I will be happy with the ones that do. For the bottom 4 I ended up only picking one this time.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I was ok with most of the suggestions but none that made me think "oh yeah that's amazing". I agree with the discussion on the discussion post, we need to find inspiration to present content based suggestions for next poll! But I also agree that there's no need to impose a theme yet as there are so many polls yet.

Zaz | 2969 comments I'm on the "everything was ok" side. I picked the 4 I was the most interested in and bottomed some I found too easy (+ the birth year because I struggled in 2015 with this one and it won't be easier in 2017).

For the moment, I find half the categories really opened so I hope to see some themed suggestions in the winners list (for those who don't remember it, I sort the categories by genre in the announcement topic).

I agree. All the a book that starts with an A, or what have you, we should all try to come up with substantive nominations or just don't put one down.

Katie | 2360 comments I struggled with the birth year category on Popsugar too! I kept thinking, if I had been born one year later or sooner I would have good choices.

J Austill | 1116 comments You guys are missing out: 1981 was a solid year. I've accidentally read two books from 1981 so far this year.

For the Black Death topic: two words for ya'll, Doomsday Book.

Nicole | 0 comments I loved all the choices, I actually didn't pick a bottom 4 at all!

message 12: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I would be fine with most categories although none was amazing. I put the ones in the bottom that I found too restricting. The birth year was tough for me in the Popsugar challenge, and my parents have uncommon names. I also found the author beginning with J restricting.

Agreed. I'm not sure why some think a genre or theme is more restrictive than finding an author whose name starts with a specific letter.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I'm with Sophie, I'd be ok with many of these categories but there were only a few that really jumped out at me as something I really wanted to do.

There were a couple of nominations that I found extremely specific, so I think it would be hard to find books for. For example, the one that really put me off immediately (sorry to whoever nominated it) was the one about the parents' first name. I don't think my parents names are too unusual, but even a quick look showed me that there are very few authors or books that would fit the category, and nothing at all that interested me.

I would also struggle with the birth year topic, since I had a hard time finding anything interesting the last time that topic was part of a challenge for me.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've it in my TBR but didn't know it was black plague based :)
