SOLVED. Book about an artist's apprentice whose paintings come to life [s]

The book takes place in modern day. It is about a woman who is a college student studying art. She meets a famous artist and he picks her to become his apprentice and he teaches her how to bring her paintings to life. She doesn't realize this until she sees a man from a portrait she had painted walking around her city. The people from the paintings will die if the painting is destroyed. The plot twist is that the artist who taught her this is actually from a painting of the original artist. The teacher was killed by this painting and the painting went to teach others this "gift." I've googled my heart out trying to find this book and have had no luck. Please help!
