SOLVED. YA? A school of magic on an island, story with Celtic themes [s]

I feel like this was a trilogy and I read these books in the late 90s / early 2000s.

All I can remember is that the protagonist (I think it was a girl) was in this magic 'school' in a stone building almost cut from the rock of a stormy island.

I might be wrong, but there was possibly a shipwreck on the beach which was down steep, slippery stone steps from the school. I think there was a young boy character as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
