Victoria Grace (torrritm) | 67 comments Oh wow! This looks awesome!

So just a though, For the first round, it would make sense if we could find shorter books, right? Maybe it's time we all start checking our ebook lists. I know I have a ton of free books I've accumulated on my ereader, that are super short. But our strategy will ultimately be up to Kazen, Margaret and Rose. I think it's probably important to set up our strategy ASAP =]

Anyway, I'm not a leader, I just thought I'd say something

For the second task, I've put aside A Court of Mist and Fury By Sarah Maas because I need Maas in my life(get it, it's a Spanish pun!) . That's a 640pg book.

prag ♻ (janayanation) Oh wow! Olympics seem fun:)

So...when do we start planning? The books I can definitely read in the first event are Vicious (probably not helpful, I think there is a book called lovely Vicious if anyone's interested), half bad, half wild, it's kind of a funny story, the moon and more, hollow city and library of souls. If none of these fit, I can find something else no problem, I just want to finish these first because they're already on my kindle:)

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments Wow, Olympics! So many things! Excited. :) :)

Ideas for the Title Relay, maybe we should group up and work out our books in little groups? So we've got:

Heat 1:
leg 1: Title Relay of THREE books
leg 2: Title Relay of FIVE books
leg 3: Title Relay of SEVEN books

Maybe we should get a group of 3 people to talk amongst themselves and get 3 books that connect for leg 1. Then a group of 5 to do the same for leg 2, etc? It would probably be easier than jumbling it all up on this thread.

Another idea is some of us could poke around and find chains of books and then post them. Example using some books from my TBR shelf:
Shouldn't You Be in School? , School For Murder , Murder at the Vicarage

and then people can jump on the chain, saying "I'll read School for Murder", or whatever...?

I hope this makes sense. :D :D

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments Question for Captains: Do subtitles count? E.g. The Killer Book of Cold Cases: Incredible Stories, Facts, and Trivia from the Most Baffling True Crime Cases of All Time -- do we use "cases" or "time" for the last word? Or.. can we choose either?

ETA: Related question: What about series names at the beginning? E.g. Doctor Who: The Forgotten Army -- to me the title is The Forgotten Army, and the "Doctor Who" part is just there as the series name (often put in parens after the title, but not so much with British books, see Primeval: Fight for Survival). So what counts as the first word?

Hi Ray,

It is the full listed title we need to work off of.

So for The Killer Book of Cold Cases: Incredible Stories, Facts, and Trivia from the Most Baffling True Crime Cases of All Time we would use "Time"

For Doctor Who: The Forgotten Army we would use "Army"

And for Primeval: Fight for Survival we would use "Survival"

Easy :)

message 711: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 456 comments Good morning Red Pandas!!

I am sipping my morning coffee and digesting all the info about Olympics... but to give you all an idea of what us captains have been thinking strategy wise....

1. We need to complete Heat 1 as fast as possible!! We can't even start reading for any other events until Heat 1 is complete. Given that page numbers makes no difference points wise, we will want to read short books (minimum is 100 pages) as fast as we can.

2. We only need a minimum of 7 team members to read for Heat 1 as we can have 1 team member read for each leg.

Ideally, we would like to form two groups:

Group 1 (for Heat 1) - those who can commit to reading a book within the next 2 to 3 days can read for Heat 1.

Group 2 (for Heat 2) - those who need a little longer to finish their first book for Olympics can read for Heat 2.

So please let us know which Heat you would like to read for.

message 714: by Kazen (last edited Jun 30, 2016 04:19PM) (new)

Kazen

First things first - we're on our last day of Battleship!

Check out the Battleship Countdown Timer here.

Be sure to get your books in before that hits zero so they count. :)

There is a 12 hour gap between the end of Battleship and the start of Olympics. The Olympic start timer is here. Books started during this gap time will NOT count for the Olympics. The rule breaks down like this:

Any books started now, and not completed til Wheel (the event after Olympics) works for Wheel as well.
Any books started now, and completed in Olympics works for Wheel.
Any books started any time and completed anytime (through the end of Wheel-a-Thon) works for Wheel-a-Thon.

Maybe the best news - The Olympic Events and Rules are here!!

Give that a thorough look, and if you have a question look again - the mods have done a great job anticipating possible issues. We'll answer any remaining questions you have here, of course. :)

And now, on to the fun part... strategy! You may want to read the rules before continuing, it'll sound like Greek otherwise. ;)

-----

We're hoping to finish Event One, Heat One as quickly as possible to open up the other events. If you do not think you'll be able to finish your first book in three to five days, for any reason, please let us know. We will place you in Heat Two, which is not as time-sensitive as Heat One.

List your "on hand TBR" - books that you can start right away. Keep in mind that for this first event there is no page count bonus, so the shorter the better! The title needs to be at least two words so we can build a relay.

We'll look at everyone's replies and see what kind of chains we can make. Someone may be able to search down a book to finish a chain - we're not expecting pages for your TBR, your top choices will do. If you have titles with one word fear not, we will be able to use them in other events.

---

Here's my list to start us off:

Who Will Catch Us As We Fall - 400 pages (ouch)
The Red Car - 224 pages
Hidden Figures - 384 pages

I also have a bunch of books on my e-library wishlist. Ones I feel fairly confident will stay available (more than one copy available, not a buzzy book):
Woman with a Blue Pencil - 191 pages
Somewhere in France - 373 pages
Urban Shaman - 410 pages
Bonds of Trust - 320 pages
Then We Came to the End - 387 pages

I am also open to reading random Harlequins to fill out chains. :)

(The page numbers are for me - you don't have to include them if you don't want to.)

Yea ideas! A couple of things:

To start, at least, I'd like to get everyone's TBR out in the open - having a lot of people look at the data will help us find the best chains. :) If we split into small groups right away it kind of limits our options, I think.

Also, re: posting chains - we have a widely diverse group here, from literally all over the world. Books that are available and easy to get for one person may be next to impossible for others. So I'm thinking we can start with these lists, get some chains started, and then we can search our stacks/e-libraries/kindle unlimited/etc. for books to fill the gaps. :)

message 716: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Okay guys - I'm off to work this morning and it's a two hour commute. I think Margaret and Rose are around right now but they have to sleep/work too, so please understand if we suddenly go dark or don't answer questions right away. I'll do as well as I can from the train but it'll be maybe six hours before I can sit down at the computer again. Thanks for your understanding. :)

message 717: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 456 comments Ray (user2637) wrote: "With the Doctor Who and Primeval books then, we count the series name at the beginning? "

Hi Ray, yes we do, as it is part of the full title.

Also, we can look at the cover of the book to confirm the exact title, but this is mainly if part of the title is in (parenthesis).

I hope this makes sense! Take a look at your TBRs and if we have books that you are unsure about, us captains will give you a definite Yes or No answer - we enjoy using our powers like that ;)

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments I'd like to join the first heat, but it starts at 3am for me and I'm a late sleeper (10 or 11am). I could get a book done that same day though, which is probably fast enough.

I have an "on shelf" shelf and can get a lot of books really quickly to read on my ipod, so that's not a worry for me.

Here's some short books I have on hand (tried to limit starting with "a" "an" "the"):
The Mayflower Project
The Lemonade War
Hope Was Here
School For Murder
Double Identity
Doll Bones
Who Could That Be at This Hour?
Nice Day to Die
Rough Rhythm
Magic of the Angels
Living Dead Girl
After the Fall, Before the Fall, During the Fall

A good source for short books is the Lazy Readers' Book Club, just be sure to check word count!

Rose

Kazan
Trust Your Eyes (this one is almost 500 p so I'd have to do heat 2)
Trust No One

Ray

Murder In Missoula
