Gillian Murrell | 497 comments Ok l have read back and l admit its all a little confusing but l believe I'm on the best team so I'm sure you will have me blowing up battle ships in no time :).
Now about me hmmm i seem to be a little older than most of you so please don't hold that against me shhhhh I'm 57 thats our secret ok. I am married with 3 daughters aged 29,25 and 24. I live in rural Victoria. My husband and l own and operate a Post Office and Newsagency in a small farming town. I love to read but due to my long hours at work i did not get to read much until l discovered Audio books. My favourite genre is sci-fi fantasy but i read all sorts and YES I HAVE READ NAME OF THE WIND great book :)
also just finished Dragonfly in Amber last month. I have been reading 20+ books per month since i joined a YA group this year.
My shelf has been made and named "wobble 2016" cords i choose is F5 now i have to go check which books i have read that had animals in them :( will let you know asap for the pre challenge.
Question: We have no clue as to what book we will be reading until the 16th ? what time zone will this all happen in ?

Viji | 389 comments Thanks you, team, for the warm welcome. This is Viji from Pondicherry, India checking in. Gillian, I am stealing the show from you - I am the 'Granny' of this team (62 - international secret!!!)).

I started reading books after I joined GR (after a gap of more than 20 years). I find I that I have to learn a lot of new authors/genres. I read books from genres - Historical Fiction, Mysteries, Thrillers, Fantasy.

I read 1 to 2 books a week. I have never been on a team challenge of this sort. In fact, I started on team challenges only this year. I hope I do not let you down. If I have some difficulty in understanding the tasks or finding books, I hope I could seek the team's help. My WOBBLE read shelf link is nbrc

My Guess for Battleship is F9.

If I make any mistakes with the books or in understanding the tasks, pl. feel free to point it out to me so that I could correct myself.

Once again, thanks and I am sure I am going to enjoy myself with you all.

That's correct - time zone is US. Books have to be started after the 17th according to the count down on Page 1 of this thread to be used for the challenge so we'll have a day or thereabouts to sort out who is reading for what :) Make sense?

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Hi Viji and Gillian welcome to our fun chatty team.

I pick B2. I admit I am also a little confused on the rules but it will all become clear as we play I'm sure.

What did you think of dragonfly Gillian? Putting in a spoiler for those of you still reading outlander :) (view spoiler)

Viji I spent six weeks in India before I had my kids absolutely loved it. Would like to go back, 6 weeks wasn't nearly enough it's a pretty big place. The nearest we got to where you live was Kerala. Sadly I have 2 small children though which have ruined any future travel plans for at least the next few years. I can dream though... And read :)

Ashley | 1439 comments Welcome Viji! Lovely to have another person from India on our team :)

So glad to here that this site has helped you get back into reading after such a long break. I don't know what I would do without Goodreads!!!

I don't think any of us have been on a challenge this intense before so you are not alone! You'll get plenty of help here so let us know if you have any questions (no such thing as a silly question!).

~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments Gillian, it sounds like you've lived a fulfilled life and I'm happy you've found audio books to work so well for you :) I am also partial to YA, though I read it infrequently compared to years ago. Sorry for the stalking, but I see you're reading Blue Lily, Lily Blue. I really liked that book and the series in general. However, I never read book 4. Sadly, the long waits between every book finally let my interest wander. I'd like to hear what you think about it!
Hello Viji! I've never been to India, but my step dad is from Pakistan, my best friend is from Bangladesh, and I lived in Dubai for 6 years, so I've known a lot of people from India and been to countries near by. One day, I'd like to visit. I also started on reading challenges this year (around March for me) and this is a huge, crazy, insane challenge! It seemed like a lot of people were newer to this sort of thing, so I think we'll all have fun discovering stuff together ^.^ Also, if you have any really good thrillers you'd like to share, I really enjoy them.
Gillian Murrell | 497 comments Just going through the rules again can anyone elaborate on this one please?
- after task for hit square is done (2 books read), members that weren't
reading that task can read book to collect extra points (page numbers
still count). Maximum is 8 bonus points per hit.
My query is on the books that can be read by members not doing the task. Are they random books of do they still have to fit the task ?
Ashley | 1439 comments Gillian wrote: "My query is on the books that can be read by members not doing the task. Are they random books of do they still have to fit the task ?"
Good question - They will still need to fit the task
..Just adding that each team member can only read one book per task
In the countdown counter the Time Zone says London, Great Britain. If it is US Time Zone, which it would be - e.g. PST, CST, EST etc. I would like to know how many hours I would be ahead!
Thanks.
Gillian Murrell | 497 comments Have i read this wrong that the guesses start on the 16th so we can get ready to start at the end of the timer? Its already the 17th here so I'm a little confused as no one is 24 hours behind us :( or am i just looking in the wrong place?
message 175: by Gillian (new)
Gillian Murrell | 497 comments I see only one team has its tasks so far I'm just excited waiting to see ours lol l see some of their miss tasks a quite difficult i hope we get lots of hits they are so much easier ;)
message 176: by Ashley (new)
Ashley | 1439 comments Hi Ladies
Apologies Viji - I was incorrect about the time zone. Commencement is as per the count down timer. That's the official time that you can start reading a book to count towards the challenge
Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments Thanks Ashley. Can I start now? When do I need to be finished? Which goal will I be allocated?
Please forgive me for asking questions. I'm on my phone and at work - so can't scroll through pages and pages. I so appreciate all the help I can get. :)
~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments I'll read Howl's Moving Castle for C3, which was my guess. Diana Wynne Jones died March 16, 2011, battling lung cancer. I cried the day I found out.

message 188: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments Hi Kimberly

Start time is in approx 9 hours and 40 minutes from the moment I'm typing - any books started before then won't be counted for the challenge.

You can select a goal that you would like to work towards from;

J-1 - read a book with a title with 6 or less letters
J-8 - read a book which has the main location (setting) as Asia
B-2 - read a book which has the main location (setting) as Canada
D-6 - read a book from one of your teammates read shelf 1. Ashley
D-3 - read a book shelved as mystery by at least 10 people 1. Nikk
A-5 - read a book that is book 1 in a series
C-3 - read a book by an author who died in 2010-2014 1. Noa
F-5 - read a book where the audio version is narrated by a female
F-9 - read a book where the first word of the title is The 1. Kimberly 2. Karishma
C-9 - read a book with a title between 7 and 16 characters 1. Gillian

As you can see we already have F9 covered

I'm not going to lie, this game confuses me.

Do I just choose any task? Or the task that corresponds to my guess? Or did I miss out?

Help!

message 191: by Gillian (new)

Gillian Murrell | 497 comments For those who have done this challenge before can you tell me what has been the best tactic in the past go for high number page books or go for as many bonus point reads with lower number pages?

I think Ashley made the guess if you weren't able to reply in time. You can pick any task, as long as there isn't already two people doing it like F9.

message 194: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments Hi Rebecca - yes you missed out on your guess for the board. I took it instead - don't worry you'll get a shot next time.

Tasks aren't linked to your guesses so you may pick any except for F9. Tasks are just above so let me know which one you want to read towards.

That's a bloody good question! I also have an enquiry. Can we read for two tasks at the same time? Especially if we should be going after larger books.
