kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Gillian and Kimberly,

Can you please pick a task you like to read for in Event 5:Chariot? It's one of the events where all members need to read at least 1 book and we're almost running out of spot. We want you to have at least more choices ;) see message 1519 or spreadsheet for tasks left unclaimed.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Rebecca and Angeline,

If either of you wants to read Elephants Can Remember, you can take the spot :)

Sorry. I'll need some help here. I can't figure out what's already taken and what's left. Please pick what you need me to do.

I can read:

For whole person on cover:
The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson The Ables by Jeremy Scott The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave, #1) by Rick Yancey Crash into You (Pushing the Limits, #3) by Katie McGarry The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey Lock In by John Scalzi
The Wanderer (Thunder Point, #1) by Robyn Carr (or for landscape)
(I have more - that seems like plenty!) :)

For landscape or green cover:
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame - except that is not the cover on my audiobook. The cover I have is this one: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I...

For animal on cover - capable of pulling a chariot:
Tracks by Robyn Davidson

For tools on cover: (Axe)
So You Want to Start a Brewery? The Lagunitas Story by Tony Magee

For green:
Sideways by Rex Pickett

There's some takings from HP, true, but it's not overwhelming. You don't need to be a HP fan, or a fan of fanfic to enjoy it. I did liked it, but it does have that slightly melancholic and realistic feel I get from Rainbow Rowell. I enjoy the ending and I find the story more successful than another book I feel the need to compare it to; The Rest of Us Just Live Here.

I've only read Eleanor and Park and maybe because it was YA contemp, I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. Also, Park didn't feel Korean and the way Rowell inserted the martial arts thing felt like stereotyping. Her depiction of the Korean teenager was off. Sorry, it's jusr that I got lots of Korean (and Korean American) friends and they're not like that at all, even the most traditional ones. So I found her characters a bit unreal.

I agree with Noa though, her book has got a melancholic feeling. Not as overwhelming as John Green's so I think she was better than Green. Lol I think of Green's books as almost verging on depressing. I am biased though as am not a fan. Also, I think his plotlines almost sound the same.

message 1329: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments I really like Carry On - didn't compare it to HP at all. I'd say that all books have a similar element to another in some way!

Interesting thoughts on Eleanor and Park Kathleen! I don't know any Korean people so I didn't have anyone to base the character off of (maybe RR didn't either!?).

I feel the EXACT same about John Green. I even gave up on The Fault in Our Stars.

I agree that Park didn't feel very Korean, but I figured it was a case of the apple fell far from the tree and assimilation (despite the fact such a big point was made about the mother). (Random fact: a high school I went to for two years had more than 75% Korean students.) And I get why it bothers you. Sometimes an author gets something wrong and you just can't get over it.

At this point I generally avoid YA Contemporary when possible (Eleanor and Park was a book I had to read for a real book club).

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Park is an apple that fell really far from the tree then!

I avoid YA contemp too as it seems like no matter how good they say it is, I am the odd one out. I read John Green and quite liked it. But when I watched the movie I questioned my own taste and can't believe I liked the book. Lol. I have enjoyed a few YA contemps I have bravely ventured to reading- thanks to reading challenges (and my cousin for lending me books)- so yeah just a matter of reading preferences.

I avoid NA too. It just disfigures my eyebrows from constant raising ;)

I'm a moody reader though so who knows 10 years from now I'll be singing a different tune *shrug*

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments I really wanted to try Rainbow Rowell because every1everyone was singing her praises. Maybe I should try Fangirl? Noa I'm asking you because we're kind of on the same boat regarding YA contemps

message 1333: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccaemma) | 85 comments @kathleen I also volunteered to read The Price of Salt for the ARM task... will this work?

I read Telephone by Rainbow Rowell a few months ago and really enjoyed it!
I've read a few John Green books (Fault in our Stars, Looking for Alaska, Paper Towns) and I can't say I loved them. I feel like the odd one out in that respect though.

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments I adored Fangirl and I quite liked telephone but I wasn't a huge fan or Eleanor and Park and don't really understand the hype.

I haven't read TFIOS ( though have seen the movie) as it has never really appealed to me as a read but I did love Looking for Alaska when I read it last year.

Whilst I like reading YA, I refer to stick to YA fantasy or YA urban fantasy rather than the YA contemporary as a general rule though I lately I have been more drawn to adult paranormal and fantasy.

With that I am off to continue reading Blood Games(Chicagoland Vampires #10) by Chloe Neill for the last 15 mins of my lunch break :-)

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments You're not alone Rebecca. I think lot of us are not really into John Green.

All arm tasks are being read for already, but am sure we can use The Price of Salt for another task :) Pleanty of tasks to go around. We're trying to complete necessary rounds and try to unlock bonus rounds if we can.

Landline is one of Rowell's adult books I think? That and Attachment?

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments You've been breezing through the Chicagoland series Nikk! Must be a very entertaining series. Have you read Marked in Flesh already? Let's talk about if you did. Bishop is such a tease.

message 1337: by ~~~N~~~ (last edited Jul 07, 2016 07:27PM) (new)

~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments Have you read Thirteen Reasons Why? I read it years ago, but I hated it. Recently though, I talked to a friend who used to teach high school and he said all his students loved it. Also, I've heard a movie is being made. It baffles me. Though, if you don't read a lot, then I understand enjoying the bad/majority of contemp (because you don't have much to compare it to). But if those are general society's standards, I'm really disappointed.
I think NA is still figuring itself out. Some I think is good, and then some of it--which is sadly most of it--is painful to read.
A lot of genres have evolved immensely in our lifetimes. While I used to love YA, a lot of the new publications bother me.
message 1338: by ~~~N~~~ (new)
~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments I skimmed Fangirl, but never sat down to read the whole thing. Honestly, I have no opinion on it. I'm open to reading it though.

message 1339: by ~~~N~~~ (new)

~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments @Nikk, I stick to the same stuff with YA. I also read YA glbt because I like to see how that's progressing and how it compares to MM Romance.
Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut  (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments haven't started Marked in flesh yet as I haven't really found any where to put it for the challenge nor have I been able to squeeze it in to the background. I will get there though :-)
I am enjoying the Chicago land series and its also been useful for our challenges as well as easy to access at the library so I see o reason to stop reading them at the moment. The last one wild things wasn't as s good as the previous but I like where the story is going so I continue to read :-)
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments I hated 13 Reasons Why! I could not for the life of me understand the glowing reviews. Have you read Ned Vizzini's (I forgot the title and am on mobile so kinda lazy to search for it lol) but it talks a bit about suicide too but ends in a more positivenote. The whole time Iw as reading it Iwas like "this guy should have met the MC in 13 reasosn why and taught her a lesson. my goodnes but the MC in 13 reasons was slefish in my opinion.
kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments We can totally use Marked in Flesh for page jumping!!
message 1343: by ~~~N~~~ (new)
~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments The only thing I've read from him is The Other Normals, which is something else. Is his book on suicide worth a read?

The girl from 13 Reasons was probably one of the most selfish narrators I've ever read. And the guy, the one who goes through all her tapes, she... tortured him basically. That book made me mad.

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments @Kathleen happy to use for page jumping once I have finished my current three. I figured I would finish my three and then see where we were before deciding what to read next :-)

message 1345: by Skandia (last edited Jul 07, 2016 10:07PM) (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments Good to see we have so similar reading taste here in our group. I'm the same. Didn't get the hype about The Fault in Our Stars, Eleanor & Park was just meh, hated Thirteen Reasons Why but ....
loved Fangirl.
Rainbow Rowell is very good author, John Green - not for me at all.

YA contemporary is usually to angsty for me but there are some gems. I can add Flat-Out Love to the pile of great YA contemporaries.

message 1346: by Ange (new)

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments I have all of these books on my TBR, only read Fault in Our Stars which was only ok for me too. my go to is usually fantasy or horror. These challenges are really helping me get more a feel for what I dont like, Im itching to do a cull as definately dont want to read any more self centered teens with instalove. ick.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Hate instalove too! Unless it's written well I can be persuaded.

@Noa: I think it was It's Kind of a Funny Story or something like that.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments @Skandia: I'll check that out because it's you!!!

message 1349: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments Instalove is a big no for me. Though, there are some authors and books that have got it right - Eversea was great, Mia Sheridan books are really good.

I haven't read Fantasy for a long time and really itching to pick up A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic, #2) by V.E. Schwab or Dreams of Gods & Monsters to finish before new Laini Taylor book comes out this fall.

Also, I have a library book on hold I need to get and read ASAP - The Girl on the Train. So that can be used for Event 2 I think or where ever it fits.

message 1350: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments ...... and I really really want to start with this Brandon Sanderson series Kathleen has been telling me about for ages :)
