SOLVED. There is a character called 'pattern' in a fantasy series... [s]

I am looking for information on a fantasy series in which one of the main characters has a daemon, sidekick, something named 'pattern' that aids her in performing magic. Another character is named 'fool' or 'jester' for obvious reasons. A kingdom is destroyed, a long lost kingdom is found, slaves turn into brutal enemies in a long war, armor and weapons have special magical properties...oh and men don't read. I cannot remember the name of this series or any of the books. Please help :)
