Books where the reader chooses the path the story goes

There's a name for these types of books but I honestly cannot remember, hopefully you will know what I mean.

My friend is a huge Dr. Who fan and used to borrow these type of books from the library. However I am not a Whovian and was wondering if there were any similar books?

I read years ago that the Goosebumps books are supposed to be like what I'm looking for but unfortunately the one I bought seems to be more of a story book?

Choose Your Own Adventure?

Goosebumps are a straight forward childrens 'horror' chapter book.

There are lots of this type of book. They used to be pretty popular. The one you're thinking of is Give Yourself Goosebumps. Here's one of them. Night in Werewolf Woods

Choose Your Own Adventure were the first and the best. There was also Find Your Fate, Twist-a-Plot...

TSR, the Dungeons & Dragons people, made a few under the Endless Quest label.

May I ask where the best place would be to find these types of books? Are they something you see quite often in shops and car boots or would my best bet be to buy online?

I would think they would be widely available "wherever books are sold," as the saying goes, since they are very "commercial." Bookstores (not sure about car boots though), as well as online.

I just did a quick search on ebay for 'choose your own adventure book lot" and there's quite a few listings for auctions of multiple books together. If you wanted to get a bunch at once that might be a good way to go and then fill in the gaps with individual purchases.

There've been at least a few books aimed at adults that let you choose the way the story went, but of course I can't remember any distinguishing details. The ones I saw were kind of romance stories, where you were choosing the activities of a young lady out for a night on the town. I only went through it once and apparently made the wrong choices, because I ended up not getting together with a nice guy and contracted an STD. It's hard out there in the dating world.

One place to look for this kind of book would be your public library. My library has a number of CYOA books in the juvenile section, and probably has the adult ones too if I ever remember the titles or authors.

We used to call them interactive novels but I had no idea they were called 'chose your own adventure' books. Cool.

I think it's more of a pre-teen book but the Follow Your Heart series (2 books) by J.E. Bright is one of them.

"Choose Your Own Adventure" is a popular brand name. Interactive novels/fiction is a more generic term.

It's sort of like calling tissues Kleenex.
