Summer | 276 comments This is a book I heard about from a friend of a friend, so I don't have a lot of details, but I am very curious and would like to find it.
It is at least five years old, and there are paper copies of it, but I know nothing more about the format.
It is some sort of book about the biology of unicorns, and I think it is illustrated. It definitely features a passage on unicorn reproduction that claims that when unicorns rub their horns together, honey oozes out and makes a puddle, and after a certain amount of time a baby unicorn climbs out of the puddle.

Some of the keywords on the Google Books page are "honey" and "pregnancy."

Scott Oh my

Summer | 276 comments Thank you for looking, but from that book's description it looks like the foal grows inside the unicorn, and my friend was really clear about it crawling out of a puddle of honey instead of being born.

Summer | 276 comments I searched inside them for the keyword honey, and asked the guys who've seen the original, and it doesn't look like either one of those is a hit, but thank you for trying!

Can you describe the illustrations - realistic/cartoony/cute, simple/detailed, painted watercolors/bold graphics, sunny/dark/muted colors/black & white?

message 10: by Summer (new)

Summer | 276 comments Unfortunately, my friend doesn't remember. He has a vague impression that is was supposed to look like a serious biology book for unicorns, so I guess that would be on the more realistic end of the spectrum? The only thing that would really nail it down as the right book is the honey thing.
I will try the listopia, thanks!

Summer, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

message 12: by Summer (new)

Summer | 276 comments Still looking! I would definitely mention having found this book. Must have dropped out of my bump rotation, though!

message 13: by Summer (new)

Summer | 276 comments Bump for the unicorn honey book

Corinne (hms_beagle) | 34 comments Could it be this book: Raising Unicorns Your Step-by-Step Guide to Starting and Running a Successful - and Magical! - Unicorn Farm by Jessica S. Marquis ?

message 15: by Summer (new)

Summer | 276 comments While that book looks hilarious, I just searched through it and didn't find anything about a honey puddle. Thank you, though!

Rainbowheart | 28548 comments Long shot, Moonsilver?

Not sure about honey, but does involve a unicorn pregnancy.

message 17: by Summer (new)

Summer | 276 comments It's amazing that there's a book where a unicorn gets threatened with being sold to a soap factory! But I think the book my friend remembers wasn't a story, it was more of a wildlife guide to unicorns. From the honey puddle he described the unicorns are never pregnant at all, they just create a spawning pool.

Merannda This is so random but I found this old tumblr post talking about the same book. The post is from 2014 and I feel like there's a fair chance it's your friend posting about it but I also thought there may be the smallest chance that they're actually remembering the tumblr post itself?

message 19: by Summer (new)

Summer | 276 comments That's very funny! My friend told me about the book a few years before that, but I'd like to see the post, if you remember where it is. Maybe it will provide a fresh lead!

message 20: by Merannda (new)

Merannda It's here https://snailchimera.tumblr.com/post/...

It seems that the user is still posting content to tumblr.

Summer | 276 comments Ha, those are indeed my friends! What a blast from the past, thank you.

message 22: by Merannda (new)

Merannda Oh my, I think I found it.

Unicorns I Have Known

There's not a lot on the goodreads page but I found this blog post https://winter-maker.com/2018/01/31/u... that talks about and has pictures of the "field notes" in the back of the book, specifically citing the reproduction via honey!!

message 23: by Summer (new)

Summer | 276 comments You found it, Merannda! I showed the blog post to my friend, and he confirmed it's the right book! Thank you so much, how did you find it?

message 24: by Merannda (new)

Merannda My first find!! :) I was just google searching for unicorn horn and honey I think, for exact phrase, with the idea of not look for the book itself but people talking about it since it's so odd. I think the blog was on the third page of results, just dumb persistence and lucky google I guess haha

Rainbowheart | 28548 comments Oh, cool, super glad this one is solved!

Good find, Merannda!
