Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments Well, we're just three points away from the first place, and there's still lots of time. I have 2/3 left of The Hunger Games, but I won't go to bed until I finish...... Maybe... I'll try! :P

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Adriana wrote: "Ohhhh! I didn't think they would be so closely related. Which series starts first - the one that is set 30 years before or Mistress of Rome?

I hope the MC gets out of the concubine."

The series order is Mistress of Rome (The Empress of Rome, #1) by Kate Quinn Daughters of Rome (The Empress of Rome, #2) by Kate Quinn Empress of the Seven Hills (The Empress of Rome, #3) by Kate Quinn Lady of the Eternal City (The Empress of Rome, #4) by Kate Quinn Which makes complete sense to me EXECPT for Daughters of Rome. I was skimming through the book and very weirdly there was an excerpt of Mistress of Rome in the back of Daughters of Rome!!! That's weird right? I've only seen sneak peaks of NEXT books not PREVIOUS books. :/

All the other books make sense to me since they are about the children from Mistress of Rome. But Daughters seems to be about the Empress from Mistress of Rome and about one of the characters aunts and some other's I haven't identified yet.

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments As for The Serpent and the Pearl (The Borgias, #1) by Kate Quinn she still seems to be a concubine in the second book from the description. :/

message 204: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments I recently read a second book in a series with an excerpt from the first book. I think maybe it was The Edge of Always. Doesn't make any sense at all!

message 205: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3733 comments @Irene - Only if you want! You can always finish it when you wake up.

@Bookbuyer - That IS really weird. But I looked up the author's website and that does seem to be the correct order. Maybe it'll make sense after you read it...

Oh no! I'm worried for her and I don't even know her.

I hope so. At least the first and second book so far have all the characters at the back so you know who's who. I'm going to compare the first and second book characters so I have a better idea of who I'm reading about. I think I never learned the Empress's name in the first book and I'm only slight certain about the second character.

message 209: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3733 comments Really? They never said her name? That's odd.

message 210: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments @Adriana - That 's the case with some series, but this particular one you have to read in order.
I definitely want to! The games are just about to begin and I'm loving it so much! It's a reread :) I've forgotten so much over the years! :D

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Adriana wrote: "Really? They never said her name? That's odd."

They might have but she was a kind of side character so maybe I just forgot?

I still am unsure who the characters are in Daughters of Rome! I've been comparing characters but for all I know the names have changed. Or they aren't the ones I think they are. :(

message 212: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3733 comments I love the Hunger Game series. I love rereading books too since they bring back such great memories depending on the book. i actually didn't like Katniss the first time around but I did the second time.

message 213: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments There are seriously four little girls in the prologue called Cornelia Prima, Cornelia Secunda, Cornelia Tertia, and Cornelia Quarta! O.o WTF?! I know that ancient Romans, particularly noble Romans were weird but to call your children first, second, third and fourth is weird!

Well, that sucks. That kind of reminds me of the first book in the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe series where nobody made sense compared to the rest of the series - The Magician's Nephew although from further inspection based on the publication date it's fourth in the series although you are supposed to read it first.

I remember loving the Hunger Games as well. The first book was the best and the 2nd and 3rd were very good as well. I didn't really like the movies though. :/

I never read that series. I always meant to but at the time it was popular I was mostly reading in French. :/

It's also why I'm a bit confused. Thankfully I have some hints of who they are thanks to an oracle but when they are all called Cornelia it's a bit confusing. Thank god they have proper names for far in Chapter 1! :D

Adriana | 3733 comments I read it so long ago! I wish I could read in another language. I blame my lack of spanish skills on my parents and the school system...

I can no longer really read in French except some very basic children's books but I am happy I had the chance when I was young. :) Even my brother didn't take the French Immersion program only me. ^-^

message 221: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments I'm also currently learning Korean and Japanese but I'm not at a level where I can read anything yet. I can read all the letters of the hiragana and katakana and maybe some kanji but my vocabulary is horrible right now. :/

I can read most of the Hangul and some words so I'm a bit better in Korean. :)

message 222: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3733 comments Wow girl! You are impressive. I just want to learn to speak Spanish which I should be able to.

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Adriana wrote: "Wow girl! You are impressive. I just want to learn to speak Spanish which I should be able to."

I love languages! I eventually want to know/learn:

Korean
Japanese
Chinese (Both Mandarin and Cantonese)
French
Spanish
German

and a few others but those are my top 7. :)

I know a few words in Spanish and can guess a few more because it's similar to French but I don't know more than say 25? Same for German. My father's family was from Germany but he didn't really speak German and my grandparents died when he was in his 20's so I never knew them. His cousin did marry a German man though so I learned a little from him. :)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments I want to improve my German so that I can get the Silber books and Ruby Red in the German editions, they're so pretty!

@Adriana - I almost never reread, so I'm really enjoying it

message 225: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments I want to learn French too!

message 226: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3733 comments My parents speak Spanish and I've studied Spanish all my life in class but they've never really had you speak Spanish to each other that's why I know a lot of words in Spanish and will understand some Spanish speakers. I say some because I only ever really understand my family's Spanish. I know that when my brother's girlfriend is Colombian and some words that come out of her mouth I have never heard of... Every country that speaks Spanish speaks it a little differently.

There are a lot of great online resources to learn languages online. It also helps if you can afford it to go to somewhere like France and just immerse yourself in the language. I dream of going to Japan and Korean some day. ^-^

Everyone is so much more cultured than me haha (;

I reread sometimes when I'm in the mood. I actually wish I reread more books from my past.

Very true. For instance I live in Canada, Ontario to be exact yet I learned France French. Not Quebecois French. :/

I'd say having parents who speak a different language is pretty cultured. No one that I know speaks another language consistently and the one cousin who spoke German has now passed. :/

I have a friend in grade school who lives across the street from me who's father was from Columbia. She spoke Spanish to him all the time at home and I was always jealous. :(

@Bookbuyer - It definitely helps to travel, yes! I was in Germany twice a few years ago and I improved so much :)
