I just finished (in one sitting!) Peter Mayle's book, A GOOD YEAR, fun fiction about a man who lost his job in London, inherited a vineyard in Provence, and started an exciting new life. I'm South-Louisiana French, and I enjoy books set in France. I started reading it last night after dinner and could not put it down. I read all night, not having to wake early on Sunday, and was rainy all weekend anyway... What a great way to avoid the rain--reading about a place with glorious weather!

Sounds like a good way to spend a rainy weekend. Ironically, I spent my rainy weekend in Ireland, reading/finishing Blood Magick. Now I'm "off" to Georgia with my next read...

I am reading two non-cozies right now.The Girl In The Ice and The Idea of You
Both of these are for a challenge I am in to spell the word SPRING.

I'm reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts One and Two and The Corridors of Time.

Enjoy your "trip" to Georgia!
Karen M wrote: "MarieBL wrote: "I just finished (in one sitting!) Peter Mayle's book, A GOOD YEAR, fun fiction about a man who lost his job in London, inherited a vineyard in Provence, and started an exciting new ..."Karen, great minds think alike! I am currently reading A Year in Provence. :)
Am only on Chapter 2 (February), since I'm reading several other books as well. Yes, it is a fun, engaging read! I now have several places I want to visit in France (I hope to get there one day!). I also want to try cooking French food, but am kind of a bad cook. I tried to make cassoulet once... I don't think it's the same made with chicken thighs and bacon, as I did, but it did taste better than most of my cooking!
I used to read the Harry Potter books when I was a Young Adult librarian, years ago. I need to get back to them. So many books, so little time! :)
Marie: I hope you are enjoying your time in "Provence." I read both A Year in Provence and Encore Provence: New Adventures in the South of France years ago and loved both.
Heather L wrote: "Marie: I hope you are enjoying your time in "Provence." I just started reading The Woman on the Orient Express and, of course, it's about a fictional trip Agatha Christie takes.
I just finished Beartown
by Fredrik Backmanand
Gwendy's Button Box
by Stephen Kingboth of which I enjoyed and would recommend.

So much so that I also downloaded an old Rick Steves travel video about Provence to my iPad! I appreciate your mention of ENCORE PROVENCE. I was not aware of it, but have added it to my TBR List! :)

Karen, Yes, fictional travel is fun! No worries about lost passports, missing flights, language barriers... But, with all my ancestors being from France (a few by way of Nova Scotia), one day I will have to dust off my passport and make the trip there! :)
Gary, Thanks for putting me on to the Toby Peters Mysteries! I am almost finished listening to the first, BULLET FOR A STAR, Stuart Kaminsky, on audiobook. The narrator's voice is perfect for the story as well! I can't listen to a badly narrated audiobook.

I acquired the eBook version a few years ago during a Black Friday sale by Open Road Media/Mysterious Press.
Last night I started reading Dear Cary: My Life with Cary Grant by Dyan Cannon. It seems to be an honest and sometimes funny window into their relationship and eventual marriage. I'm only around 100 pages in but so far I'm enjoying it.

Just finished Hero in the Highlands by Suzanne Enoch, and started the 2nd book (about Gabriel's sister) : My One True Highlander
At this moment I'm in a JAK's mood. I've just finished All Night Long and I'm reading Smoke in Mirrors.

I love Rick Steves' programs. Except...he make me wish I could afford to travel. :-\
Read The Pearl by John Steinbeck over the weekend. A good, fast read.

"Thanks! I've never read any of her work. I put ALL NIGHT LONG on my TBR! :)
Heather L wrote: "I love Rick Steves' programs. Except...he make me wish I could afford to travel. :-\."LOL! I agree about his travel videos! In the Provence video, when he is at the market in Arles and leans over to sniff the lavender, I can *almost* smell it, but not quite... Wish I were there! :)
Also, I am into the CAMEL CLUB series (David Baldacci) lately. Recently finished DIVINE JUSTICE, and am about to begin HELL'S CORNER. Good that they are audiobooks, so I can pack boxes while I listen. The narrator is excellent!
Well, this seems appropriate. I'm reading Around the World in Eighty Days. Most comfortable way to travel is by book!
Karen M wrote: "Well, this seems appropriate. I'm reading Around the World in Eighty Days. Most comfortable way to travel is by book!"I agree! Books make excellent travel companions, and are great learning experiences! I read Around the World in 80 Days a long time ago; I should read it again.
Speaking of... I am also reading PICNIC IN PROVENCE, by Elizabeth Bard. Is the story of how she and her husband and young son move to Provence, from Paris, and start a .... I don't want to spoil the surprise! I am enjoying the book! It is a continuation of her first book, LUNCH IN PARIS.
I am looking forward to her third book, out soon!
Karen M wrote: "Well, this seems appropriate. I'm reading Around the World in Eighty Days. Most comfortable way to travel is by book!"This is my favorite book. I usually read it once a year.
Hi Everyone. I like stand alone books and series. I'm just going to put my favorite authors. Some are cozy but I interweave them with other mysteries. Bill Crider (Sheriff Dan Rhodes mysteries), Charlene Weir (Susan Wren mysteries), James Lee Burke (Dave Robicheaux mysteries), Jenn McKinlay (cozy author ~ Library Lovers), Joanne Fluke (cozy writer Hannah Swensen mysteries), Joyce and Jim Lavene (Sharyn Howard mysteries), Krista Davis (cozy author ~ Paws and Claws), Lee Harris (Christine Bennett mysteries) Lorna Barrett (cozy author ~ Booktown mysteries), Mary Daheim (Bed and Breakfast mysteries), Mary Higgins Clark (her stand alone books), Miranda James (Cat in the Stacks mysteries), Sidney Sheldon (his stand alone books), Stephen White (Alan Gregory mysteries), Steven F Havill (Bill Gastner mysteries), Stuart Pawson (Charlie Priest mysteries), Valerie Wolzien (She has two series and both are good. Susan Henshaw mysteries and Josie Pigeon mysteries), Vicki Delaney (Constable Molly Smith mysteries)

Agreed! Have not read Around the World in Eighty Days, though I am familiar with the story. I remember watching a TV movie version years ago.

What I find hilarious is that nearly every TV/movie version of the book features a hot air balloon. Some of the books even have a hot air balloon on the cover. There is not a hot air balloon in the story.
I've been hitting the sale tables at B&N lately to shake up my TBR list. Right now I'm midway through Sandra Brown's Mean Streak. I'm a runner, although not in the caliber of Emory Charbonneau, and that was a draw for me to pick up this book.
For the Love of Katie by Erica Lucke Dean 4-StarsIf you love the off-beat, this book is for you.

Updated Monday 6/5/17. Finished it today. Was rainy so I stayed in most of the day and listened while I packed boxes. I enjoyed it, but am sorry to have finished the last in the series! Does anyone know if there will be more? Thanks!I am still listening to the audiobook HELL'S CORNER, by David Baldacci (Camel Club series, book 5). It's long, so slow going, but I listen as I pack boxes and prepare for moving. The narrator's voice is perfect for the story. Cozy mysteries are my favorites, but I do enjoy a good spy thriller! And the main character, Oliver Stone/John Carr, is one of those brave, heroic men you would love to meet in person. :)
Still listening to
by Diana Gabaldon, finished
by Julia Quinn (just a 3*), and am hoping for better with
by Lorraine Heath, who is the FAC of the Romance Reader's Group.

The closest they come to a hot air balloon is when they miss the ship in NYC and Fogg mentions a balloon wouldn't work!! LOL
I just finished that book and We Bought a Zoo. Now I've started Turtle Diary and back to one of my favorite series with Tricky Twenty-Two which has already given me an LOL today!
I finished BULLSEYE, by David Baldacci (a combination Camel Club and Will Robie book). Since I finished all five books in the Camel Club series, I thought I would try this one. It was fairly short, and I enjoyed it. Read it in one sitting!
I plan to start the Will Robie series now, since his character seems like a younger Oliver Stone/John Carr! :)
Binge reading today so I finished Turtle Diary and Tricky Twenty-Two. Now on to Heidi and The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat.
Karen M wrote: "Binge reading today so I finished Turtle Diary and Tricky Twenty-Two. Now on to Heidi and The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat."I love binge reading! I enjoyed Tricky Twenty-Two when I read it. I need to add The Supremes at Earl's... to my TBR! :)
Working on a challenge for another group so finishing up Sworn to Silence the first book in the Kate Burkholder series as well as The Woman in Cabin 10. Enjoying the first, not sure about the second one yet.
Started A Room with a View by EM Forster last night. I was looking for a reasonable-length "R" book (meaning, 200 pages or less) and settled on this one. The page numbers shown in the description are misleading, as there is an intro, index, etc., making actual book around 150 pages. Got through the first three chapters last night.
A Merciful Truth by Kendra Elliot 4-StarsGreat suspense book

Almost finished with The Mezcal Rush: Explorations in Agave Country
by Granville Greene

I am currently reading/listening to (and enjoying!) the audiobook, The Girl with No Shadow, Chocolat series, book 2, by Joanne Harris. The narrator's voice is perfect for the story, and audiobooks are great to listen to while packing and organizing boxes! Will I every get finished moving :-\
I read and enjoyed the other two in the series, Chocolat, and Peaches for Father Francis, a while back. All interesting, with details that pull you in and keep you in the story!
