I wish I was reading something fun, but it has been school books and it's not very fun.

Agatha Christie rocks! Have you read The Mysterious Affair at Styles? It's one of my favorites. =)
I'm reading Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man Ultimate Collection Book 2 right now. It's good, but I'm reading it completely out of order, so I feel that I'm missing some key points. My library doesn't have book 1. =]

Katherine (katherine23) | 43 comments @Abigail how do you feel about Shadow and Bone? I liked Six of Crows sooooo much better!

I'm currently reading Vicious. It's my first Victoria Schwab book, and so far, I love it!

I'm enjoying it, but I wish Alina had more morality. It's quite interesting, though--rather like Red Queen.

message 10: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katherine23) | 43 comments @Abigail I never read Red Queen! I need to, though I've read lots of negative reviews that make me hesitant...

message 11: by Abigail H. (new)

Abigail H. Leskey (runeknitter) | 57 comments @Katherine and Mary Red Queen is dystopian in the manner in which the The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is dystopian. There are evil, powerful people, and oppressed people. But it's fantasy, and has royalty. I thought it was very good--but it had me in a distressed state. I can't say why because it would be a spoiler.

Abigail H. Leskey (runeknitter) | 57 comments I did; it was good too :)

message 13: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katherine23) | 43 comments @Abigail that gives me hope! I LOVE Narnia. I'll be sure to check Red Queen out!

It isn't the same kind of book as the Narnia ones, even if the sort of dystopian it is is similar. But you may like it!

Katherine (katherine23) | 43 comments Have you read The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater? That series seems to fit your descriptors, and is magical enough to solve any problem! In my opinion, at least. Hope this helps!

Grace Crandall (gracecrandall) | 26 comments @Valiantpevensie4 Have you read the Knight and Rogue series by Hilari Bell? It's kind of a fun mix between fantasy and mystery, with lots of banter and adventurous stuff :) it's six books long, and the first book is The Last Knight.

Timing/Luck" by Gerry Duggan is a visual autobiography that chronicles his two-decade journey through the intersecting worlds of comic books and Hollywood. Presented as a series of photo essays, the book captures candid moments with notable figures such as Stan Lee, Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman, and many others, offering readers an intimate glimpse into the lives of creators, comedians, writers, and filmmakers.
BLEEDING COOL

Duggan's photography is characterized by sincerity and curiosity, with each image telling a story that reflects his personal experiences and relationships within the industry. The photos range from candid shots in writers' rooms and green rooms to evocative images of city streets, showcasing the vibrant and often unseen aspects of the creative process.
MONKEYS FIGHTING ROBOTS

While "Timing/Luck" provides a rich visual narrative of Duggan's personal journey and the individuals who have influenced him, it primarily focuses on his interactions and experiences, offering a subjective perspective. As a result, the book may not fully explore the broader systemic and structural aspects of the comic industry, such as the challenges faced by emerging artists, the intricacies of publishing, or the diverse experiences of creators beyond Duggan's immediate circle.

In summary, "Timing/Luck" serves as a heartfelt and visually engaging memoir that captures the spirit of camaraderie and creativity within the comic and entertainment industries. However, readers seeking an in-depth analysis of the industry's inner workings may find that the book offers a more personal rather than comprehensive portrayal.

Isola: Prologue by Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl

"Isola: Prologue" is an enchanting prelude that offers a captivating glimpse into the origins of Olwyn and Rook, the protagonists of the acclaimed "Isola" series. This one-shot, originally serialized as bonus material in Motor Crush issues #1-5 from December 2016 to April 2017, sets the stage for the epic Miyazaki-inspired adventure that fans of the series know and love.

Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl craft a rich and mysterious narrative that feels both intimate and expansive, giving readers a taste of the bond between the warrior Rook and the enchanted queen Olwyn. The story's layered world-building and poignant emotional beats make it a compelling entry point for new readers and a rewarding supplement for fans of the original mini-series.

The art, illustrated by Karl Kerschl and colored by Msassyk, is a visual feast. The intricate details, ethereal landscapes, and evocative character designs draw readers into a fantastical world reminiscent of Studio Ghibli's finest works. Every panel is a testament to the power of storytelling through art, with a dreamlike quality that enhances the narrative's emotional resonance.

For those unfamiliar with "Isola," this prologue serves as an excellent introduction, inviting readers to explore the mini-series further. And for long-time fans, it offers a deeper understanding of the characters' backstory, adding layers to their journey.

Whether you're here for the narrative, the art, or both, "Isola: Prologue" is a must-read. Its ability to weave magic through every frame is a testament to the creative team's skill and vision. Highly recommended for fans of fantasy, adventure, and stories that linger in your heart long after you've turned the last page.

Review of Space Ghost by David Pepose (Dynamite Entertainment)

David Pepose’s Space Ghost is a stellar example of how to resurrect a beloved classic with a modern twist. Dynamite Entertainment has taken the timeless hero from the Hanna-Barbera archives and crafted a story that both honors its origins and feels refreshingly new. Pepose expertly weaves a tale that retains the adventurous spirit of the original while injecting deeper character development, a more intricate plot, and contemporary themes.

The narrative dives into the backstory of Space Ghost with greater emotional depth, exploring the psychological toll of being a lone protector of the cosmos. Pepose balances high-octane action with quieter, reflective moments that humanize the iconic character. This duality makes the story resonate with long-time fans who grew up with Space Ghost while being accessible to new readers.

The nostalgia is palpable, but it never overshadows the storytelling. Familiar elements, such as his iconic power bands and the sleek Phantom Cruiser, are seamlessly integrated into a darker, more cinematic universe. These callbacks evoke warm memories for fans of the original show, but they’re not mere fan service—they serve the story and enhance its emotional weight.

Dynamite’s work on Jonny Quest and now Space Ghost signals a bright future for other Hanna-Barbera properties. The updated tone and mature storytelling applied to these classics could breathe new life into characters like The Herculoids, Birdman, or even The Impossibles. If Dynamite continues this trend, they could become the go-to publisher for reimagining the Hanna-Barbera universe in a way that appeals to both nostalgic fans and modern comic enthusiasts.

In Space Ghost, Pepose and Dynamite Entertainment demonstrate a masterful understanding of how to blend reverence for the past with a vision for the future, creating a story that feels both timeless and timely. This comic is a must-read for fans of classic heroes and those eager to see what new heights nostalgia can reach in the hands of skilled storytellers.
