Kate S | 6459 comments 20.1 South America
In honor of this year's Summer Olympics host country: Read a book by an author born in South America.

Please ask any questions about task 20.1 here.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14223 comments We currently have a only a short list of South American authors. Looking forward to your expanding it this summer!

Amanda | 1527 comments Challenge excepted!

Sure, I was going to try to finally get around to Marquez to see if I really do dislike him or just One Hundred Years of Solitude, but it is now my ambition for next season to add at least one author to this list!

Amanda | 1527 comments And I have found one not on the list that is at my local library!

The Seamstress was written by Brazilian born Frances de Pontes Peebles!

Still looking.

Kazen | 623 comments I loved Seeing Red by Lina Meruane, recently out from a small press. My elibrary had it, though! And it's in translation so there's style points to be had. My review is thisaway if anyone's interested. :)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments By the definition this time Isabel Allende can used for the task. Because she is now a US citizen, she often doesn't fit.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5271 comments I have one to add! I just bought this one for another group and didn't get to it yet:

The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll by Álvaro Mutis, Colombia

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14223 comments My penciled in book is The Old Man Who Read Love Stories by Luis Sepúlveda, Chile. (which combos with 20.3, winners!)

Kazen | 623 comments I'm going through some international imprints and finding neat stuff. :) I think these books will work, but double check if you decide to use one.

Target in the Night by Ricardo Piglia, Argentina
Thursday Night Widows by Claudia Piñeiro, Argentina (others also in English translation)
Rage by Sergio Bizzio, Argentina
Ghosts by César Aira, Argentina (others in English translation, but watch the page count)
Selected Stories by Adolfo Bioy Casares, Argentina

Hotel Brasil by Frei Betto, Brazil
The Body Snatcher by Patrícia Melo, Brazil
The Club of Angels by Luis Fernando Verissimo, Brazil
The Taker And Other Stories by Rubem Fonseca, Brazil

Loquela by Carlos Labbé, Chile

In the Beginning Was the Sea by Tomás González, Columbia

The Cardboard House by Martín Adán, Peru

Wow, Kazen, you've been busy! Not sure how many authors I'd be able to find locally available ( seriously, I was looking for a Russian book yesterday and there was only one copy available within my State library collective - and it was in Arabic!), but it would be great to see some of these names come up in the completion list after your efforts :)

message 11: by Kazen (new)

Kazen | 623 comments It was a lovely excuse to noodle around some of my favorite publishers' websites. :D

A Russian book only available in Arabic?! Oh dear. I hope your search for a new author to add goes better :)

I was trying to find a Russian book that was smaller than a brick to read. I think I am actually going to read a book set in China, but I like to explore my options :)

I must look at publisher websites more, I think, after seeing your post.

I feel the same way about the book/author! probably why I'm dragging my feet about Love in the Time of Cholera

Funny thing was that I just came back from the library (just as these tasks were posted) to borrow a couple of books to finish off my WotW... but I think I'll save the 1 from South America for Summer instead ;)

Brief Space Between Color and Shade by Cristovão Tezza -who isn't on the worksheet! :)

I quite enjoyed that one! And I actually loved the bad-ass cover I had for it: The Seamstress by Frances de Pontes Peebles

Have picked it up from the library now. Hadn't looked at the page count, so larger than I expected! Still, looking forward to reading it :)
