Late at night! It's my quiet time :)My three favorite books of all time:
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
Flowers From the Storm, Laura Kinsale
The Persian Boy, Mary Renault
These three books possess such quiet, haunting beauty and exquisite, heart-stopping prose. They remind me why I need to write and why I feel like I will never succeed.
I read, on my breaks at work, then when I get home from work, then in the evening then again at bed time, sometimes first thing in the morning. lol I read whenever I can. I tried reading in the bathtub, but just about dropped my ipad in the water so decided that was a bit to risky. lol
I read on breaks at work.I read whenever I'm on the bus to somewhere, even on my holidays. My all time favourite: Dare You To,The Wrath And Dawn,Lost And Found, Sea Breeze series

Megan,I am retired and enjoy an abundance of free time. However, even though I love to read and am always currently in the process of reading a book, it still requires two to three weeks to finish one. There are just too many other interesting and enjoyable things to do.
My all-time favorite books include:

LOL are zip lock bags really waterproof??
I still love reading an actually paperback book.

Ha! This describes my day, too, except I also read in the bathroom, at breakfast, on the way to work, between classes (I teach)...pretty much anytime I'm not working. I read whenever I can. During meals, on work break, and I shoot for at least an hour before bed. If I'm nearing the end of a book I've been known to drop everything in order to finish. I'm a big fan if teen fiction, though I haven't been a teen in over a decade. Richelle Mead is my favorite author.
I read for about an hour at lunch and half an hour before bed when I can. But I get where you're coming from, that's simply not enough time to get through books quickly, so I supplement with audiobooks. They're excellent! So then I can get my story fix while I'm doing laundry, making dinner, sweeping the floor, driving, etc. By doing this I can "read" a lot of books each month. For a laugh - Miss Match by Erynn Mangum
To sit on the edge of your seat - The Negotiator by Dee Henderson & Thin Ice by Irene Hannon
To get you thinking - Pascal's Wager by Nancy Rue (don't let the bad cover throw you)
For a little fantasy - Black by Ted Dekker
For relaxing warm and fuzzies - The Island of Heavenly Daze by Lori Copeland and Angela Hunt
And finally, for a well-written historical - With Every Letter by Sarah Sundin
*waves to all*I'm one of those that always has something to read within reach--these days it's usually m'Kindle--so I read just about anytime except at night. I'd love to read in bed before going to sleep but once I sit in that bed, it's all over!
Favorite books hmm....
Eternal on the Water by Joseph Monninger
Recently, I read a historical fiction by Geraldine Brooks called The Secret Chord--about King David from the Bible. It was so, so good and will rank among my favorites.
All time faves:
The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon
Any Maeve Binchy stories, such tapestries!
Any Nora Roberts stories, specifically her Born In series and her In Death series.

When I am able I love to read in the mornings, however, because I am so busy I wind up doing audio books. I hate that because there is nothing like holding a book in your hands, sitting back in a chair and reading. But every now and then before I go to sleep I get my hands on a book for real and delve in! I have discoverd the greatness of Kindle too, because sometimes I am not at home but I have a spare thrity minutes and can just pull what I am reading up.My favorite books include all of Jane Austen's, C.S. Lewis' Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, A Wrinkle in Time, The Hunger Games series, anything by Dickens but I love David Copperfield....there are too many too mention LOL. I read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon back in the day when I read more explicit books, and I have to say she is the most amazing writer, so amazing her work would have done just as well without the explicit scenes. That book series ranks at the top with my others because of her ability to keep history accurate and convey it so well. She is an expert in weaving fiction into history and making it believeable.
In an attempt to improve my characters, I've started reading more books with rich internal dialog. The books I've found aren't particularly a genre I'd have navigated toward in the past, but I've learned to appreciate the author's skill. One such author is Maggie Stiefvater. I'd recommend her Raven boys for an excellent use of the craft.
I hardly have time to read. I read at night before I sleep and on weekends. I love suspense, mystery, historical and romance. I'm currently reading
and
I say the first one is more erotic and funny than the latter. Also, Billionaires' Indulgence is a series while Far Pavilions is a historical novel.
However, my favorite books are by Nicholas Sparks and Dan Brown.
I'm a full-time college student, stay-at-home mom of four children, and an author. Surprisingly, I have a lot of time to just read. I've converted to e-books for the purpose that I can book mark my page and not worry about the children tearing it up. Some days I will read all day, while others it is mainly at night. I have trouble sleeping, so that's when I do most everything. My main genre is erotica and romance when I'm reading. I write contemporary romance, mainly. But, to be a better author, I thought it would be good to open my views and indulge in some more genres, things I normally wouldn't read. Currently I am reading: All Roads Lead To Terror: Coming of age in a post apocalyptic world https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... and it is quite good. I've barely read half of it, but it is truly captivating.
If you'd like to view my novella, here is the link: Come Back to Me (Wilson Creek) by K.R. Reese http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HHI04PI/r...
A very valid question when, whether at home, working or retired we all seem to be very busy.I regret with all the demands upon my time there is little left free for reading. Nevertheless, I attempt to read for twenty to thirty minutes of an evening but do not always achieve even that. Consequently can take few weeks/months to complete even the shortest of books. But I always take time to write and post reviews.
I enjoy the classics, by that I mean most of the traditional ones, but obviously do not get to read them often these days. I primarily restrict myself to memoirs as the most appropriate genre for my own writing and blog.
I often suffer from insomnia, so I do the majority of my reading whilst my family sleeps! lolFave books:
The Last Temptation of Christ by Nikos Kazantzakis
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
The Light of the Fireflies by Paul Pen
The Devil's Lieutenant by me (sorry, couldn't resist!) lol
Shervin, you make a good point! I'll add my own book to my list above, Shadows of the Ancient Wood, because let's face it, if a person doesn't like their own book they shouldn't be writing!
Kimberly wrote: "Really Shervin?? I was born in Maryville, not too far from where you are! Lucky you :)"That's why I mentioned it! :)
I used to work in Maryville! We live about 20 minutes from there.

I also read Angels and Demons and didn't think that one was as good.

How was The Book Thief? I loved the movie, but haven't read the book yet. It's on my TBR list.
Most of the books I've read were from many years ago, before I was writing. Now, I do manage to read when I can. I gave myself a 5 book challenge this year and so far I am on book3.My all time favorite books are
Jane Eyre
and
Flowers in the Attic/Petals on the Wind
I've read many good books over the years, but those three stick out for me
I have all the time in the world to read but I don't. I'm a bit lazy lately when it comes to reading and it's by habit. I've never been into books and while I've found a new appreciation for them as an author and to read more I've hit a wall once again. I did start reading a book I started a few months back again so hopefully this will put me into a nice rhythm.

But not to discipline yourself to also read other authros books does seem a little bizarre and discourteous. You suggest you do not read by habit, which means you could read if you make the choice to do so. Okay it may be difficult to find something you like - perhaps reading books in the same genre(s) as you write would be the answer.
I like to read in the late evening. My favourite, all-time books are 'All Creatures Great and Small' ( especially the humorous stories), 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Little Women'. Of the modern, indie authors, I like what I've read of Jenny Schwartz and Celeste Theissen.p.s. I'm an author, too.
It's been tricky for me to find time to read lately, since I take care of my two young kids all day, then try to work on my art and house-cleaning at night (yeah, I know- who ISN'T buried in work at all times). For a while I'd try reading for an hour before bed, but I usually ended up dozing off in the middle of reading. Now I get up an hour or so before everyone else so I have quiet time in the morning to read. That seems to be working out better.
Beyond that, I'll sometimes read in the car while my toddler and infant sleep in the back (the only way to get them to nap is to drive them around for a bit).
Some of my favorite books include:
The Scar by China Mieville
The Wolf of the Steppes by Harold Lamb
the collected William Hope Hodgson
I also enjoy reading non-fiction books about biology, geology and history. Right now I'm currently reading through a book called Great Day Trips in the Connecticut Valley of the Dinosaurs by Brendan Hanrahan.
I'm a student but during my time off, I do freelance writing, so most of my time is really unstructured, which surprisingly makes it difficult for me to read because I feel guilty if I'm taking time for myself and not writing. Having a book blog to post to regularly gives me a good excuse to read, though. :) I end up reading when I'm about to go to sleep, when I'm in the bathroom, and when I'm waiting for the tea water to heat up. If I'm in a place where the internet is slow, then I read while waiting for pages to load as well. It's so hard to choose favorite books! I really like the Harry Potter series and the Outlander series. I've recently become obsessed with the Once Upon a Time book duo by Maggie Shayne, and I always love books by Julie Garwood and Rick Riordan.

I'm a pretty big reader (surprise!) and was curious when everyone has time to read. I currently follow a few book blogs and read about some book worms who read 4-5 books per month. Working full time and keeping busy on the weekends, I try to read a little every evening after work and as much as I can on the weekends. Sometimes it seems like it takes me awhile to finish a book. Let me know when everyone has time to read and some of your favorite books.
