Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments GR hi, need help:

I want to add the following books (thankfully given on Amazon) to Manto's roster of books, but couldn't find a link (add a book) on his author page.

Kulliyat-e-Manto Vol.1: http://www.amazon.com/Kulliyat-Manto-...

Kulliyat-e-Manto Vol. 2: http://www.amazon.com/Kulliyat-Manto-...

Kulliyat-e-Manto Vol. 3: http://www.amazon.de/Kulliyat-Manto-A...

I know hardcover's ISBN is given as ASIN but just add it because the book is hardcover and I think someone added it on Amazon like this. These are REAL volumes (and have complete works and critiques of Manto's works).

Can you help? I need it added because I'm reading it right now, and couldn't find this version on GR.

Thanks.

Michael Korleone (michaelkorleone) | 3881 comments You can use this link to add books under Manto. You can find this link by clicking on Saadat Hasan Manto's books on his profile and then clicking on "* Note: these are all the books on Goodreads for this author. To add more books, click here. " located at the bottom of the page.

Make sure that other editions (different format or language) of these books don't already exist. If they do, go to that specific book and click on "add a new edition" located under book's description section. This ensures that all editions of the same book stay together.

This is applicable to any author profile on Goodreads . Best of luck reading Manto :-)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments Michael thanks, didn't catch the link on the bottom! Will get on ti now. Thanks again!

message 4: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16359 comments I have removed the ASINs, because they are only used for Kindle and Audible editions on Goodreads.

ASINs are used on Amazon to sell second-hand copies of print editions, but they have no meaning outside those single copies.

message 5: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments So do I tell Amazon to add-a-book using the original ISBN? And then add it on GR?

message 6: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments Or should I add the original ISBN in 'description' - there would be no link to Amazon that way though.

message 7: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments or is it fine the way it is?

message 8: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments I've added the original ISBNs in description.

Okay thanks Michael and Lethe - unless there's some other thing you want me to know, kindly delete the topic!

message 9: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16359 comments There shouldn't be a link to Amazon with this ASIN, because the copies for sale are the only ones that have that ASIN. Usually ASINs are only assigned to print editions when they contain no ISBN.

ISBNs and ASINs should be valid for whole editions, not just single copies. If ISBNs are given in the copies you are reading, you can add those to the ISBN(13) fields. If not, those fields can be left empty.

message 10: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16359 comments Noorilhuda wrote: "kindly delete the topic!"

We don't delete topics, because they can be useful for researching future questions.

message 11: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments Okay got it Lethe - I didn't know it was link to a second-hand copy! - but the good thing is that it got resolved - books added! Thanks a bunch!

message 12: by lethe (last edited May 19, 2016 09:44AM) (new)

lethe | 16359 comments Noorilhuda, the titles should be added in Urdu, and the author name should be added in Urdu in secondary position. Could you change/add that? (Plus also move the ISBN - without hyphens - to the ISBN field.)

Thanks!

message 13: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Do you have the ISBN on the book in hand?

If so add it to the ISBN field, if not leave it blank.

If the ISBN is already in use on GR, but on an edition with some differences to yours then you can add the ISBN to the description

message 14: by Michael (new)

Michael Korleone (michaelkorleone) | 3881 comments I added the Urdu name سعادت حسن منٹو. The books need a little more cleanup (titles in Urdu, ISBN in appropriate field, adding editor, etc)

message 15: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16359 comments I don't know what the window of opportunity is for non-librarians to make edits, but if Noorilhuda could post here with the changes, a librarian could add them.

message 16: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments My MAC does not have Urdu software. I did try to change the ISBN but it gave an error as in 'some information on this book may be erroneous' etc. (I see you guys have graciously done it).

I checked the 'editor' part on first go, but the option isn't there in Add Books (it simply says 'add an author' 'change the author'). Sorry didn't want to bother.

message 17: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments Thx for helping me understand what adding a book entails.

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments @Lethe, Michael, Paula, I have another query:

How do I add the following famous Pakistani (Urdu-language) author on GR?
http://www.dawn.com/news/1220373
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishtiaq...
https://www.facebook.com/Ishtiaq-Ahme...
https://www.facebook.com/InspectorJam...

There is another Ishtiaq Ahmed on GR (who writes non-fiction in English-language). This is a different Ishtiaq Ahmed. He wrote detective novels, popular amongst children. So you can call him a YA author! Actually I wanted to 'like' and rate a book of his and couldn't find him, hence the query.

Also, I don't think his books had ISBN (or at least Amazon has none of his spy novels, or him for that matter!) Does that impede the addition?

Do let me know thank you.

message 20: by Abcdarian (new)

Abcdarian | 26579 comments You can add the books, but put an extra space in the author name for differentiating: Ishtiaq^^Ahmed, where ^ means a space. This will separate his books from the single-space writer. Not having ISBNs does not prevent adding the books.

message 21: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments Abcdarian, thanks, huge help. Am about to try this. Thanks.

message 22: by Koenraad (new)

Koenraad (koenraadkelemen) | 6993 comments Is it possible that the author you mean is transliterated as Ishtiaq Ahmad on Amazon and on Worldcat? All book titles are transliterated however...

message 23: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments Abcdarian, I've added Ishtiaq Ahmed as you directed:

https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

I cannot add his pic in author profile (because Librarians alone can edit and add stuff there). Can you kindly add his pic and bio as given on Dawn newspaper link and further below:

http://www.dawn.com/news/1220373

His bio (mixture of excerpts taken from Dawn/ Express Tribune and Wikipedia):

Ishtiaq Ahmed was born in Panipat c.1941, in the Indian state of Haryana. After partition he migrated to Pakistan. He grew up in Jhang where he did his schooling.

He was a Pakistani fiction writer famous for his spy and detective novels in the Urdu language. He started by writing short stories for children and then wrote his first novel in 1973. He was at his peak of popularity in the '70s to '90s due to his Inspector Jamshed series, Inspector Kamran Mirza series, and Shoki series. As of 2014 he was an editor of the magazine Bachon ka islam and writing novels for Atlantis Publications, Karachi.

He was a rare Urdu author of mystery tales who captured the imagination of children belonging to every stratum of society. But such was the charm of the web of mystery that he weaved through his unparalleled Inspector Jamshed series that a big number of his readers were adult men and women. His language was simple but effective.

Isthiaq Ahmed authored 800 books. Some of the famous and widely read Inspector Jamshed novels are Jeeral Ki Wapsi, Reshmi Parchhaen, Begaal Mission and Geemoof Ka Waar.

He died on November 17, 2015 at Karachi International Airport on his way back to Lahore, before boarding the plane after attending Karachi International Book Fair held at Karachi Expo Centre.

Having a photo available is not sufficient. The photo must either be clearly public domain, or the photo's copyright holder must have provided permission.

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments Koenraad wrote: "Is it possible that the author you mean is transliterated as Ishtiaq Ahmad on Amazon and on Worldcat? All book titles are transliterated however..."

@Koenraad, no that is another Ishtiaq Ahmed (he writes non-fiction and on political themes and is already covered under GR). Like I said, I wanted to add an entirely different author, so Abcdarian suggested I give 2 spaces in the new IA's name to distinguish between him and the former one.

Can any of the Librarians help me upload the pic and bio - I've given both in the msg above. Would appreciate it a LOT! Thanks.

Rivka, there's fb page of the author - that would be okay no?:
https://www.facebook.com/AuthorIshtia...

And a fanpage:

Only if the author has given permission for the photo to be used elsewhere. Fanpages are more of a problem, as they may not own the rights to the images they have posted.

message 28: by Noorilhuda (last edited May 25, 2016 09:55AM) (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments Rivka the author is dead! I don't think he'll mind his pic being used.

And if you click on the fan page pics, you'll see that IA was at a public forum (introducing his book in a seminar).

Can the bio be added (with source credit)?

The bio should be fine.

The author is only fairly recently dead, so it would be a question of what his estate or heirs would give permission for.

Great Rivka. Thanks. Who will add the bio? (I don't have the authority).

I understand the U.S. laws on piracy and copyright (as well as owner permission) but I don't see how adding an author's pic in a book-reading site requires heirs' permission (especially when I've given links of the author in public places). Anyways, let me know how to go about it, I'll work something out. Anything is better than a blank page! Thanks again.

message 33: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 20 comments Guys, thank you for being so helpful. It's a treat really.

Have another query: This one relates to another famous Pakistani writer, Ashfaq Ahmed. He's dead too. He has 2 accounts on GR:

one with pic (spelt 'Ahmed'): https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

one without pic (spelt 'Ahmad'):
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

Can GR just retain the pic one and merge or delete the non-pic one? (the correct spelling of his name IS 'Ahmed')

Do let me know if I can do it by myself. Thanks.

message 34: by Abcdarian (last edited May 30, 2016 05:41AM) (new)

Abcdarian | 26579 comments #33: Merged the author profiles. You could look over the books and post if any need combining, thanks.
