SOLVED. Fiction set in English woods, each chapter was in the eyes of a different animal, no human characters- not a kids book - extremely violent [s]

So I read this as a kid in the mid to late eighties, but it might have come out earlier.
Each chapter focused on a different animal, doing normal animal things- hunting, finding food, trying to escape being eaten by other animals.
It was super-violent, I remember being horrified by the description of an eyeball being pulled out/pushed in.
I definitely remember there was a hedgehog that got ran over, a cynical owl, a mole or vole or something that in one chapter killed an animal, and then later on had an epic battle with a crocodile (!) that had somehow got into woods.
Each chapter was named after the animal it was about, and one of the chapters was mugger (the crocodile). It had a line in it about mugger-bugger or bugger-mugger or something along those lines..
Please help, it was such a cool, different book. At least I thought so when I was a child...
