Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 416 comments Saw an invitation to join in another group and I’m overdue for rereading Mary Stewart, so I’m delighted to join this group even though I’m already in way too many groups! I’m a retired avid reader of mostly comfy fiction, living in Oregon.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Everyone, I've pinned the MWYT discussion threads to the top of the buddy read section. Start whenever you like! We have all month but this is the kind of book you can read in a day or two if you're a quick reader. You can just add on to the end of the threads, though if you have time it's really interesting to go back and look at the old comments and pictures that were posted.

BTW, the Kindle book is $3.99, a pretty decent deal for one of Mary Stewart's best books (IMHO).

I got the kindle last night for that price and added the audible for fun this time. The narration is a treat this go round!

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 439 comments I love buddy reads in this group bc you all put a lot of thought and work into them..with pictures and facts. The countries we visit in the novel, etc...

Cat Craddock-Carrillo (catcraddock) Hi all! A friend introduced me to the world of Mary Stewart last year. I started with The Moonspinners, followed by Nine Coaches Waiting, and am now engrossed in My Brother Michael. I think I'm hooked! Would love to discuss these books and all things Mary Stewart here with fellow fans.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Welcome, Catherine! We just started a group read of Madam, Will You Talk? a few days ago, and you'd be more than welcome to jump in! It'll be going all month. We'll probably schedule a second buddy read for June.

There are also lots of discussion threads you can explore under Buddy Reads, with many interesting comments and images from the settings of all of Mary Stewart's books.

message 811: by Linda (new)

Linda Martin (lindajm) Welcome Debbicat and Catherine! I'm happy there are so many interested in reading these books this year.

message 812: by Julie (new)

Julie | 81 comments Welcome everyone new! Lovely to see the group active again!

message 813: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Grant (elsiegrant) | 101 comments Mary Stewart is a bit of a role model for me – too many reasons to put in a parenthesis! – so when I had occasion to travel to Greece recently, for research of my own, my preparations naturally involved rereading This Rough Magic. How thrilled I was when the ferry from Ancona to Patras chugged into the Corfu canal to stop at Igoumenitsa! Nowadays it travels between the mainland and Corfu, rather than going around Corfu, and I'm sure I spotted the rocky island on which Spiro was officially marooned. Hopefully by the time this group gets around to This Rough Magic, I'll have worked out how to post pictures and videos here – I took loads – and I'll tell you all about it. Meanwhile, I've had fun catching up on your discussion of Madam, Will You Talk. Very enjoyable, thanks!

message 814: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 225 comments We should read Rough Magic next! Do we have a plan for the next one?

message 815: by Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽, Moderator (new)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Nope — open to suggestions! I think someone mentioned Nine Coaches Waiting earlier. We could vote on it. Or just plan on both in the next few months. :)

message 816: by Linda (last edited Apr 21, 2022 01:17AM) (new)

Linda Martin (lindajm) I was expecting to read them in the order they were written.

Welcome, Elizabeth!

Throwing this out there then: how many people here are interested in doing a group read of Thunder on the Right? I can’t give it a really strong recommendation but it does have its moments. It’s highly melodramatic. :)

Elizabeth Grant (elsiegrant) | 101 comments Linda wrote: "I was expecting to read them in the order they were written.

Welcome, Elizabeth!"

Thank you, Linda! And me, too, I'd really like to read the books in order for a change, since usually I just grab whichever strikes my fancy. The romances are high on my comfort read list.

message 819: by Linda (new)

Linda Martin (lindajm) I read Thunder on the Right in March - and Nine Coaches Waiting and The Crystal Cave. Then I decided to read the books in chronological order and backtracked to Madam, Will You Talk. The next one I want to read is her second novel, Wildfire At Midnight.

message 820: by Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽, Moderator (new)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Funny, I always thought TOTR was her second book, but you're right. Wildfire is a much better book, so that would work for me. TOTR is third.

message 821: by Linda (new)

Linda Martin (lindajm) When we get to TOTR I will reread it. Also Nine Coaches Waiting!

message 822: by Julie (new)

Julie | 81 comments So Wildfire is next, right?

message 823: by Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽, Moderator (new)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Yes, let’s just go with the chronological order plan and people can join the ones they’re interested in. Everyone, let me know if you’d prefer to do a group read every month or every other month.

message 824: by Veronique (new)

Veronique | 65 comments Great. Every month would work for me.

message 825: by Linda (new)

Linda Martin (lindajm) I'm able to read one every month....

message 826: by Julie (new)

Julie | 81 comments I’m fine with one a month too.

message 827: by Lynnie (last edited Apr 25, 2022 04:15AM) (new)

Lynnie | 15 comments Hello everyone, I'm Lynnie from the UK. I've just come across this group and would love to join in with rereading Mary Stewart books.

Oh and one a month would be good too.

message 828: by Julie (last edited Apr 25, 2022 04:37AM) (new)

Julie | 81 comments Hi Lynnie, and welcome… you picked a great time to join!

message 829: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 225 comments Hi & Welcome, Lynnie!
I have a slight preference for every other month, but am basically OK with every month.
if Wildfire is next, I need to find the book!

message 830: by Veronique (new)

Veronique | 65 comments Welcome 😊

message 831: by Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽, Moderator (new)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Okay, the majority says every month, so that's what we'll do! They're all pretty quick and easy reads, and there aren't too many so we'll be done around the end of the year. Do find Wildfire, Jackie - it's an exciting one (marred only by outdated gender behaviors again, but that kind of goes with the territory in most of these 50's/60's era books).

I'm planning on just doing these group reads with MS's romantic suspense novels, BTW, but if a few people want to do another group read of the Arthurian books, I'm happy to accommodate that.

message 832: by Veronique (new)

Veronique | 65 comments Thanks for all this Tadiana.
As it happens, I do want to read her 3 Arthurian books. Real Life being bonkers, I hope to start them in July, if anyone else is interested. These are the ones I’ve been dying to get to.

message 833: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 225 comments sounds good to me!

message 834: by Julie (new)

Julie | 81 comments I haven’t read the Arthurian ones since my teens - probably time for a revisit!

message 835: by Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽, Moderator (new)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Maybe what we can do is assign July to The Crystal Cave (those who only want to read MS's romantic suspense novels can take a break that month), and thereafter assign every other month or every third month to one of the Arthurian books. Those of you who want to read those books, let me know how quickly you want to go through them, and I'll work it into our master group read plan for 2022-23. :)

Seems a good idea. I’ve never read the Arthurian ones since I was at university - so this would be a good opportunity to read them again.

message 837: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (dandelion_cottage) | 54 comments I haven’t read the Arthurian books in years, so I’d be interested in joining.

that sounds like a great schedule, Tadiana, I have never read them and looking forward to it.

message 839: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (iheartbannedbooks) | 2 comments This is wonderful! One a month in chronological order.

I am an aspiring writer, and Mary Stewart is role model for me, too. So this is a great chance to study and discuss her writing. (Hopefully it will improve my own.)

message 840: by Veronique (new)

Veronique | 65 comments ☺️ That sounds great. Something to look forward to since we’re moving again in mid June, hopefully to the ‘permanent’ address.

message 841: by Julie (new)

Julie | 4 comments That sounds like a good plan!

message 842: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie | 15 comments Thank you for the welcomes Julie, Jackie and Veronique.

message 843: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie | 15 comments Will anybody else be reading/rereading Wildfire at Midnight? I'd like to start - it's one I've found that I haven't read!

I’m reading it - have been watching for the threads!

message 845: by Veronique (new)

Veronique | 65 comments Should start soon ish 😊

message 846: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 225 comments I've read the first 6 chapters and look forward to the discussion. happy to have a real book in my hand rather than an ebook, despite not being able to highlight quotes with my finger and later share them on this site!

message 847: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 416 comments I’m going to start Wildfire at Midnight soon—depends on how much reading time I have while visiting my sister-in-law.

message 848: by Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽, Moderator (new)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Sorry to be slow - I'm pinning the Wildfire at Midnight discussion threads to the top of the Buddy Reads section now, and will dig out my copy and join the read. :)

Jackie | 225 comments here we go! :D
