Roll Dice

Monopoly Rules

• You do not need to wait for the other player to finish reading before you take your next turn. As soon as you're done reading, go ahead and roll.
• Each property is represented by a shelf. For each grouping of shelves/properties you would read a certain amount of books from that shelf. Once you finish the amount of books you would then “Own” that shelf.
• If you land on an “owned” shelf you would have to read a certain amount of books above what the owner had to read.
• If one person “owns” all of the books in a group (think Mediterranean and Baltic) and another player lands on their properties they would be able to recommend at least one of the books that the player has to read.
Utilities – For the Electric Company – Read a book where the characters have electric chemistry. For Water Works – Read a book that makes you cry. Books have to be 150 pages or more.
• If a player lands on an “Owned” utility, then the owner will recommend a book with electric chemistry or that makes them cry.
Railroads – For Reading Railroad – Read whatever you want. For Pennsylvania Railroad – Read a book set in Pennsylvania. For B&O Railroad – Read a book that someone else thought stunk. For Short Line – Read a novella. Page minimum 150 for all but Short Line. 25 page minimum for the novella.
• If a player lands on an “owned” railroad, the owner will recommend a book for that specific railroad.
Chance and Community Chest – there are 12 cards for each. If a player lands on one of those spots they will roll the dice a second time and then would “pull” the corresponding card and do whatever it says on the card. Once a card is used, it will be out of play unless needed to finish the game. Books for this would need to be at least 150 pages.
Being in Jail – To get out of jail you would need to have one of the get out of jail free cards, roll doubles on one of your next three turns or read a book where a character is arrested or has been in jail. Books for this would need to be 150 pages or more.
Just Visiting – Read a novella of your choice, 50 page minimum
Free Parking – Read any book 100 pages or more
Go – Read any book of 200 pages or more
Luxury Tax/Income Tax – Read a book with a rich character, a really poor character or someone that works in a bank. 150 pages or more
• Each roll, you'll post your starting spot, the roll and your new spot on the board.
• When you finish your book you'll post the spot your on, book name, rating, when it was finished and a short review of the book. If you were supposed to read a book that had a specific element (water works utility, book that made you cry), then please mention that in the review.
• Re-reads are allowed.

I'm not sure, this is my first game. How do you want to do it? I can edit post 6 into a tracker if we want to do it that way.

message 15: by Megs (new)

Megs (meganlikesbooks) | 63 comments I'm glad for no double-ups. I don't want to have a reading race right off the start!

message 16: by Maddie (new)

Maddie (maddisonbruce) | 3778 comments Yes please! And just put down like how many books we're allowed to have read each week (using dates) or something? Does that make sense?

message 17: by Maddie (new)

Maddie (maddisonbruce) | 3778 comments Haha true. But I landed on a good one :p I can use my current book I'm reading :D

message 18: by Megs (new)

And Maddison, you definitely got lucky!

message 20: by Megs (new)

Reading: undecided

I'm thinking either Dead as a Doornail (Sookie Stackhouse, #5) by Charlaine Harris or Heat Rises (Nikki Heat, #3) by Richard Castle or Y by Marjorie Celona , since I have all three of them currently checked out from the library (and they all can be used elsewhere at TCF).

message 27: by Megs (new)

Megs (meganlikesbooks) | 63 comments Ok, I added our current spaces to post 6.

Do you think we should track books/week or just total books read? I'm thinking if we do total books read, then if someone gets a certain number of books ahead (3? 5?), then they will stop and wait for the other to catch up a bit. What do you think?

Sounds good 3 books ahead

message 29: by Maddie (new)

Maddie (maddisonbruce) | 3778 comments Yeah that works. But I think that's also a little unfair because what if someone (probably me) gets sooo far behind and then everyone's waiting for me.. I think we should just keep track of how many books a week we're allowed to read, so that if some of us don't read that many we're able to read more in a different week to catch up? Well, not 2 books, but more like 2 rolls? Is that alright? Because some locations take more than 1 book per space.

message 30: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 694 comments 2 rolls sounds good to me

message 31: by Megs (new)

Megs (meganlikesbooks) | 63 comments Ok. What kind of format do you want? Just each weeks and our rolls per week?

message 32: by Megs (new)

Megs (meganlikesbooks) | 63 comments Ok, I've finished my book and now own Vermont. I went with Variant. Still don't understand the ending at all and I don't have book 2. :(

Anyway, I think we've agreed we can roll up to twice per week, so I'm going to go ahead and roll again.

Roll 3+2 = 5. That puts me on States Avenue. Author's first or last name starts with S. I'm going with Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas.

Completed Reading Railroad
Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2) by Sarah J. Maas
Spot: Reading Railroad
How it fits: Whatever I want
Rating: 4 stars
Read 16/5/16

Review: I have to be honest, the first half of the book was a real let-down. I found it rather boring with not much plot. And the second half was almost a repeat of the first book, I found. But the extra little plots were amazing, like (view spoiler) and (view spoiler) I so did not expect that! Also not sure what's happening with (view spoiler) One thing I found quite repetitive was the (view spoiler) Sorry if that doesn't make sense. I don't know at all how (view spoiler) I'd like to read the next one, because I feel like it'll reveal heaps more.

message 36: by Megs (new)

Megs (meganlikesbooks) | 63 comments I wasn't aware I needed a review, but here it is:

Variant
I liked some parts of this book and wasn't crazy about others. I love the idea of a sinister boarding school and all the mystery surrounding it. But I wasn't crazy about Benson as a character. As Isaiah points out, he can be selfish and I also couldn't get into his whole loner persona. So I had some trouble connecting with him, which makes it hard for me to rate a book highly.

The other thing that bothered me was that I felt like this book needed another chapter right at the beginning. I felt like the book started really abruptly and I would have liked to have gotten to know Benson a bit more before he arrived at the school.

Because Benson was such a loner, I feel like we never got to know the other characters very well, except Becky. I would have liked to see more characterization out of Mason and Curtis and some of the others.

But I did like the mystery surrounding the school. But the ending! I don't get it. Like I actually reread the last page and I'm still confused. I'm sure the sequel will answer what is going on though.

Review: Not as good as the last one but better than the others, I think. I didn't like this one as much as I thought I would. Not much extra stuff happened, but we did find out a little bit about some minor characters. Glad to have this series finished finally. Been reading it for about a year now on and off. I was really pleased that (view spoiler) I was surprised though that (view spoiler) The ending was a big let-down, with (view spoiler) Oh well. I can forget about all of these complex characters and sub-plots now. Glad I read this series.

Read: Outlaw Hunter by C arol Arens finished 5/22/16
Review: When I clicked "finished" on here, I put the rating as three stars, but it really only deserves about two and a half at best. It was pretty interesting to read, and most of the characters were decently fleshed out to different extents, but there were way too many things that flat out annoyed me for me to really give it any rating higher. For starters, I absolutely loathed the fact that the MC (Melody) (view spoiler), though I'm sure she didn't do it on purpose, it was just the easiest for the author so that she could make her as miserable as possible whenever it would help the plot. The author had a hard time making up her mind in other parts, too, like how (view spoiler) I wish I was exagerating in that last sentence, I really do. And it drove me absolutely nuts for the last fourty or so pages. Gyarg! And don't even get me started on Dixie! That woman was more like a parody of an old school Disney villian than an actual human being. I seriously expected her to bust out in a monologue at any moment (though she did literally "cackle" at a few different points, so I guess that's close enough). Also, there were quite a few momets where a character temporarily suffered from too-stupid-to-live syndrome. Basically, not a good read. Definitely avoiding the author completely in the future. *sighs*
