0possum | 70 comments I also can't read Orson Scott Card & MZB. Many older works I'm more willing to read and do enjoy. Those authors are a 'product of their times' although I expect more from sci/fi & fantasy authors.

One modern author I have a real problem with (in a different way) is Sherri Tepper. Her real life views coincide with many of my beliefs but it affects her writing. She keeps hitting the reader with a 2x4. So her ideals actually get in the way of the story. You don't have to find out elsewhere what her stance on anything is. She also seems a bit sexist and very moralistic. When I think of her, I think that if she were my next door neighbor she might well go into my garbage can and ask why I threw away that plastic spice container instead of putting it in the recycle bin. And I know nothing like that scenario would probably ever happen. That's just the reason I can't read her books. So while I don't disapprove of her stances, I do disapprove of her tactics.

Isn't that funny? She's one of my favorite authors, and I see her as exactly the opposite :) Her books to me read as very much about equality and being non-judgmental.

Most of my friends -actually all of my friends- agree with you. I prefer a more subtle approach. I like to walk away from a novel thinking 'Oh Hey, I should think about that.' rather than 'Oh Hey, that author is telling me I have to think about that.' It's a minor thing really. I do agree she wrote well.

I know, right? I was so disappointed when I read A Room with a View after having seen the Merchant-Ivory film. The movie was so light and funny. The book was blunt and heavy-handed: "See how ironic I'm being here? I'm so ironic!"

I think I may remove that from my books I keep meaning to read list.

Michele | 2488 comments There are not books I won't read because of the author, but there are books that I will only buy second-hand, so the author doesn't make any money.

And I refuse to pay money to see a Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson movie.
