ABANDONED. Fantasy; Gnome kills trolls and hunts game birds with bow and arrow while riding a robin

Hello,
I read this book between 1986-1988 in Scotland

It was ordered from a school order sheet and aimed at MG or Childrens Chapter

dimly remembered plot involved a young gnome or his village being attacked by trolls and our hero gnome having to rescue his girl/family.

I believe our gnome rode a robin or other type of bird and hunts grouse or other game birds with a bow and arrow, I think he also had a spear, and fished for minnows at one point. I think he had to survive in the woods for a while, I'm remembering snow/winter. His robin may have been killed or died of exposure. He kills some trolls, but I do not remember there being any set piece battles.

I think there were occasional, realistically drawn, black and white illustrations
