Your overall thoughts about the story? Any other comments you'd like to discuss?

Phrynne | 607 comments It was far too reliant on massive coincidences linking characters together and putting them in the same place at the same time. I kept thinking that I don't believe real life policing works that way at all. The books overall are improving though which is a plus!

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments This was one of the best in the series for me and I enjoyed it.

It's the best so far for me, too.

Phrynne, Paluka was the best cop I've seen in the series so far. His behavior showed all the investigative instincts I'm accustomed to reading in my better police procedurals. I didn't have any issues with how they tied cases together. However, they missed Sister Kate and that rang true.

Also, his skepticism in believing the priests were molesting young boys fit the character as his religious beliefs were at odds with his police training. It appears to mirror attitudes of that time.

I just wish Kava would get some training on writing adult romance or just leave it alone. Even Gwen's attitude towards her relationship with Tully was juvenile. Don't even get me started on Maggie/Nick/Adam.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Yes, the romantic elements are very weak.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments In what decade do you think this story was set? If only ten years ago, I think even most Catholic police would know about priests being possible suspects in child abuse when they have close contact, with altar boys & girls, youth group outings, etc. Surely parents are more vigilant than in the 1950s, for example.
I may be mistaken, but there are too many stories on TV and press coverage of such things.

In general, I did like this story best so far. If we just get down to Tully and Maggie doing their case work in the future, it wouldn't bother me.

The first printing of this book was 2006.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I thought it was this century, Jonetta!

I was also thinking that Timmy's mom matured more than I expected, although there still seem to be some blips there IMHO.

Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments I wasn't very impressed with this story. I thought the book we read in April was much better.

The killers (Campion and Sister Kate) were both obvious to me. I picked them out as soon as they were introduced. There were no clues that made me think that I hadn't picked the right villains.

Bringing Nick back into the story annoyed me. In my mind he was done in this series. I don't understand why Kava would bring him back, especially since she has already introduced another potential love interest for Maggie. I don't know why she bothers with this aspect of the story. It doesn't seem to be working well at all.

I was really annoyed that R.J. Tully wasn't in this book. He is by far my favorite character in the series. And I don't understand his relationship with Gwen. They are "taking it slow". So that means they won't even call each other when he is out of town for a couple of weeks? Really?

On the plus side, I like the addition of Detective Pakula. He seemed like a good cop who knew what he was doing.

I was bugged about Tully's absence, too. Don't get me started on how his relationship with Gwen was handled.

Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments When I started reading this story, I kept wondering where Tully was. We had scenes with Gwen and scenes with Maggie, but nothing was mentioned about Tully being on vacation until page 100, unless I somehow missed it. I would think that Gwen would have maybe been thinking about confiding in him if he were there. She certainly should have called him.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 7669 comments Mod
I wish I understood the author's rationale for sidelining him for this story.

Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments Maybe she thought she had too many characters in this book. It felt like the book was bursting at the seams with characters. Between the many detectives working these cases, dead bodies popping up everywhere, several Priests and clergymen in the mix, people playing the online game, Gwen's patients, receptionist and parents, I'm surprised I could follow the story.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I hope the partners are both investigating something in our next book. Also that there are fewer TSTL thoughts and actions.
