I actually like the team of three better than just two partners. It certainly looked as if this crime needed all three people working full out as they tried to solve it.
I thought the three of them worked well together. Jerry was whining at the beginning of the book, but he seemed to get over it. I hope we get to see more of this team in future books.
I also liked the dynamics and Kizmin does appear to be the link that was missing to create a real partnership between Edgar and Harry. That said, Edgar is still getting on my nerves with his whining.
I'm not really sure that I get the purpose of Edgar's character. He's not a true partner to Harry. It would make more sense if he quite and Kizman became Harry's permanent partner.
Maybe this is in preparation for a transition. I still can't forget his betrayal, even though Harry seems to have adjusted.

I like the dynamics between Kizmin and Harry - they have the right balance. I liked Edgar at first and then just found him to be extra weight to Harry.
Basically Jerry represents a detective with an average work ethic. Harry already knows that Edgar will never make his decision-for-Christ, will never pursue homicides as a mission (as Harry does).Kiz shows potential beyond Edgar's, in almost every way. She's intuitive and examines all the angles, she's serious. She's a good candidate for advancement as the department improves its diversity profile.
I think the reader learns a lot about Harry as he reflects on these two characters / partners.
