Sebastian seems to take lots of risks (i.e., going to see Jack Slade and antagonizing him). Is he that fearless or foolhardy? How is the author trying to define this character?

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I wonder whether Sebastian is getting too impatient to get at certain truths, which has made him reckless, or whether he feels impotent with respect to some of the truths (personal ones) that he does know.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments There are times when I think that Sebastian just doesn't care what happens to him as if his survivor's instinct has taken a hit and needs some rehabilitation.

I'm still trying to sort this out with the character. Has his time on the battlefield affected his view about mortality? Does he have a fatalistic view about it? I wonder how this will change once he's married and has a child.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments I think it will change once he realizes that he has something to live for.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments Good question, Jonetta. I think part of it is that he's just not thinking of what might happen next or what the consequences might be. He doesn't feel responsible for anyone at this point - although I think he has a second of insight when he's trapped in the burning crypt and his thoughts flash to Hero and their child. Like Lauren says, it will be interesting to see how fatherhood and a wife may change him. Right now I think he feels he has nothing to lose.

Food for though, Veronica. Nicely put.

Good point, Veronica!

Mary Beth | 193 comments I feel that Sebastians character is selfless and fearless. He seems to have no fear.

Joanna | 139 comments He is showing signs of destructive behavior not only in the risk he is taking, but also in his drinking.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 242 comments Sebastian goes into situations like he has a death wish. Sometimes I think it is PTSD, lack of sleep, and the frustration with his personal life. He just doesn't care what happens.
