2017 Group Challenge - The Brainstorming

A book that takes place under the sea - medium/difficult
A book where the main character has the same name as you - difficult?
That last one can be modified to one ..."
I'd have to modify the name one unless I go with my last name.

I would have to as well, as I'm unlikely to find anything with my name, so I would have to go with last name, or Maggie which was I used when I lived in England.

You can see your page count on your stats page:
Statistics for MrsJoseph
Of course all the books need to have a page count entered in their data and you have to have marked the date finished for all the books and then ensure you're looking at the right edition for each book. I care about my spreadsheet's number more.

read a pulp/noir novel - easy
This one can be pulp, pulp-adventure, pulp-crime, noir, or probably even hard-boiled. Ideally it has a cheesy cover like ..."
I'll go for that - super easy for me as I love pulp :)

Thank you! I could not find that page anywhere.
THey say I'm at 8800+ pages. I'm probably closer to 10K or a little over. I have about 12+ reviews being held on my blog. (I only post 3x a week). I'm scheduled through mid-June right now.

I find them entertaining.
I like the Shelf-Cloud one too. Although mine is pretty ridiculous because I shelve all my countries and US makes everything minuscule.

Their page count should be treated with a big dose of "with a pinch of salt". My calculated pages read is 9,350. The GR tally is 6,865, which is way off.

The easiest way to do that is to add the pages in your 2016 bookshelf if you've got one. I see for Orlok that the two audio CDs are clocking in at 9 and 2 pages respectively and there's another four books are missing page counts.
Then again one of those no page books has a paper edition with 528 pages and the kindle edition is 378. I always look at my page count as +/- 20% annd that's when the page counts are there for all the books.

I agree. The whole "chapter = hours" thing doesn't make sense to me.

I suppose it works for those who primarily do audiobooks, but honestly, they should have an "hours" field with the option to also include the page count for the corresponding paper edition on the audiobook book record. Then everyone would be happy.

How's them apples?

I usually fall asleep within 15 minutes...

I was pretty motivated to finish a book last night. I've got a lot of books out right now and am motivated to get down to one public domain read for the SFE challenge.

I want to see how many library books get converted into a sale.

Would you believe that I have yet to come up with a single category suggestion for this? Not a one.

Something to do with Florida? Plenty of great Carl Hiaasen books out there...

- A book that at least partially takes place on a boat (easy?)
- A book in which all or most of the primary characters are retired (easy)
- A book that takes place in in-land Florida and excluding the Everglades (tons of books on the coastal areas and Keys, so this is a bit more challenging) (medium)
- A book involving a hurricane (medium)
- A book that involves going on a fun outing and then getting lost (med / hard?)

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened

Hmmm... You've made me realize that I'd vizualized all of my suggestions as novels. Should I edit to specify or just leave it so that others can interpret as desired?

That's a great point. IDK. I totally would have used Hyperbole - there's this awesome section on her mom, her and her sister getting lost in the woods.
But if you were looking for novels...

Hmmm...if we read about a boat that sinks we can knock off takes place underwater too. :P
I'm going to need help with in-land Florida.
Does it have to be a hurricane? Could it be a cyclone instead? Tropical Storm? Rogue wave?
I already know the book I would read for the retired one.

I would say from Tropical Storm up to Hurricane would qualify, as they are on one "weather spectrum". I'm intentionally theming around Florida for all of these (the getting lost was something we actually did Sunday :D) so I'm going to restrict it to common Florida weather events, though it doesn't have to take place there.

But if you were looking for novels... "
I think I'm going to leave it for interpretation. I don't read a lot of non-novels anyway, so if I do those categories, I'll go with novels, but I don't see a need to be that specific for everyone else.

Make (buy?) at least 3 book hauls (# of books over 3 purchased at one time) that are under $5USD. (easy)
-I say easy because the Main branch of the library system here has a permanent "store" installation and my local Goodwill also has a huge book section. I just bought 7 books for $2.25.

So this is just buying and not actually reading them?

So this is just buying and not actually reading them?"
Good point.

Three hauls of what has to be more than three books is twelve books or more than a couple of months of reading for many people.
This one would certainly indicate that books can and should fulfill multiple categories.

How about...a multi-strand challenge? Read at least 3 books purchased within 2017. The books read - in order to count for this line item - have to have been purchased via some type of book haul. The requirements of book hauls is that the book(s) have to be dirt cheap (entire haul under $5).

I like this better, a little easier to complete :)

26 (3) a haul of books: 2017 purchase; 3 or more books; < $5US (MrsJoseph)
I ranked it difficult because finding good cheap books can be difficult and reading three books definitely makes it more time-consuming.
I think this one has given me some ideas on what the form of this challenge should end up being and I think I'll keep it a secret until its unveiled closer to the end of the year.
So do your worst with the challenges everyone.
Read a book by an author from Iceland. moderate

Read a book with a robot as the main character. (moderate)
Read a book written in first person. (easy)
If I (or anyone else) has come up with any of my suggestions before, please ignore. My brain isn't processing stuff as efficiently as normal, and I forget things.

You can always browse through the list of categories in post number two or three of this thread.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn would work for the letter "T" but not the letter "A".

or
Read a collection of books that represent a box of crayons.
That would add at minimum Brown, and Black if you were going for a basic pack of 8.

I love that! :)

I'm going to go with the box of crayons and the eight standard colors as long as no one has a problem with that.
I'm puzzling out how the letter one affects the setup. 26 books is gigantic number to cover Nyssa and I was hoping that no individual sub-challenge would be > five or six books 26 books is probably 30%-50% or most people's reading year.
read a pulp/noir novel - easy
This one can be pulp, pulp-adventure, pulp-crime, noir, or probably even hard-boiled. Ideally it has a cheesy cover like MrsJ showed us. I never got around to reading The Vengeful Virgin by Gil Brewer this year because I found Bust by Ken Bruen as an eBook from my library.
I know, it's setting me up to have to read a title from the US.
