Another month gone and more books read!

This is a thread for you to discuss what you read in the last month. Is there anything that you'd utterly recommend? Or something that really sparked your interest and surprised you?

Marina (sonnenbarke) In April I read:

The Golem - really not my cup of tea
Philippine Speculative Fiction Volume 1 - a very good collection of short stories from Filipino authors
Reading Lolita in Tehran - good one, although perhaps I expected something slightly better
Remember Me? - a very light read, nice anyway
I disturbi dissociativi - no English translation, it's a book on dissociative disorders, too technical unfortunately
Il Libro dei Sussurri - no English translation, a book about the author's Armenian family, from the late 19th century to the present
Orphic Songs - good collection of poetry, though not outstanding
ແພງແມ່ Mother's Beloved: Stories from Laos - not my cup of tea
Quando nasci è una roulette - no English translation, this was a good book giving voice to second generation migrants living (and sometimes born) in Italy
Antigone - my favorite book of the month, a highly recommended retelling of Antigone by Sophocles

Holy Disorders was a good mystery
A Room with a View
Chaucer's Canterbury Tales I was surprised that some of the stories were vulgar.

Margie I read a bunch of books in April but there were a few standouts:

Between the World and Me Wow. This book has been talked about everywhere and with good reason. It's a beautifully written, not-too-long memoir in the form of a letter from a father to his son. If this doesn't make you re-think what you thought you knew about race in America, nothing will.

Ways to Disappear By literary fiction standards, this was action packed. An American translator goes to Brazil to find her missing author. This is a great read if you like books on the quirky side. The author is a poet and it shows in the spare but very evocative writing. You'll feel like you're in steamy Brazil - read with a cold drink by your side.

The Nest I loved this. The author draws you in and makes you care about some not-so-likable people. What could be depressing is hopeful. This would be a great summer read.

My Name Is Lucy Barton It's hard to describe the appeal of this book. While a woman is in the hospital her estranged mother comes to visit and they talk about past events. It doesn't sound dramatic but I couldn't put this down.

Susan (suzybop) | 90 comments I resolved in January to not buy any new books until my brimming to-read stack was considerably reduced. I should have resolved to give up chocolate, that might have been easier. In April I read 4 brand new, newly published books and thoroughly enjoyed them all :)
Flawed
The One-in-a-Million Boy
Eligible: A modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice
The Plea
