Rahul | 162 comments It's as like in real life. Everyone seems right when we know the background.

I know everyone has gray shades. No one is perfect here. but, wat drit did was wrong on so many levels. He always wanted to be King since he was kid. Because of his disability he could so he mis-guided his children. He was like mithi shuri. He was evil. You dont try to kill others children or support ur childeren's ill intensiond. There is no justification. Kunti loved her children. She never encouraged Pandavas against Kauravas.

I can justify Duryodhanas behaviour but not Drit

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Wrongs on so many levels! Agree Aarti. Hate him most for the dice game and cheer haran part!! He was the one supposed to stop all that!
This was something he did not do. There are many things he did like you mentioned which shows a bad heart.

Who do u think is male protagonist?
Female ofcourse Draupadi.

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments By the way, Yuganta talks about contradictory views, I just observed a small contradiction in Yuganta itself.

Essay on Gandhari describes how Drit, G, Kunti n Vidura were in the jungle when D sensed fire. In that episode, they are all together just before dying and it also says somewhere in this essay only that V was the first to die.

In Father and Son essay, its described how Dharma went to meet them in jungle and asked D where is V... that part clearly says V entered Dharma's body limb by yogic powers.. just before he died.

Both contradiciting each other on how and when Dharma died.

Thats a tough one. Not Arjun.
One among Duryodhan or Karna...
Oh no wait.. definitely Devavrata :)

I actually dont remember book much. I read it when I was 11th and I liked it so that time spl last chapter on Krishna. Now, my views are dift. I dont believe abt that thing she mentioned abt Dharma and Vidura.
I still dont know if Dharma is really his son.
thats the I want read original Mahabharat and Ramayana to get things clear. Sanskrit is so rich language. Each word has multiple meanings so difference of opinion. U have to read it with hardcore Sanskrit reader.

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

I think Arjun. coz story revolves around him. Geeta- soul of Mahabharat was told for him. He was connected to all imp events of Mahabharata.

He doesnt have to be good or bad.

I noticed that too, In one all walk towards the forest fire, in one they wait in meditation for the fire

That's the problem, not good at Sanskrit ourselves, we depend on various interpretations of the same.

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

Then I will wait for Aarti's translation of original texts :P:P

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Me too :D
In the meantime, you can still go for her current english texts.

@Aarti : So much of insight. Which was the most enriching Mahabharata book for you?

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments @Arpit : I rated another book... and my average rating is still 3.21! I couldn't have rated it 3.21 :\

Magic of Rounding-off

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

Gorab wrote: "@Arpit : I rated another book... and my average rating is still 3.21! I couldn't have rated it 3.21 :\"

Simple math-
Avg. rating before the 135th rating-3.21
That means avg. of 134 ratings was 3.21
Now average rating after 135th rating- {(3.21x134)+4}/135=3.2158 ~3.21
*wears Pran's sunglasses*

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments It was 3.21 before, after another rating still 3.21.
How rounding off?

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

I want to do something in rural-education field. And not just education, but awareness too.

She forgot the comma:P

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Arpit wrote: "I want to do something in rural-education field. And not just education, but awareness too."

Now that's a noble thought. Reminds me of the lady protagonist of The Painter of Signs... forgot her name :(... Ahh Rosie or Daisy? Daisy! Yes Daisy :)
All the best Arpit. I hope you pursue that.

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments By the way, I'm 50% done with Yuganta. I hate to say this but Draupadi's essay was below par :( Why bring Sita into comparison when no pondering questions or insights could be churned out of that?

I had decent expectations with Yuganta. Except Bhishma's excellent essay, so far its only an average read :\

message 77: by [deleted user] (new)

I like Draupadi so much she was a strong woman like Kunti. She has been through alot. Panchal to Hastinapur to Khandavawan to Indraprasth and then Wanvas. What happend with her was the worst that could have ever happened to any Princess and Queen.
First marriage with 5 men, all politics between Kauravas and Pandavas then Chirharan. She went through hell still she was so strong. Always encouraged Pandhava and she was great devotee of Krishna. She never lost his faith in him.

Rahul | 162 comments One of the Panchakanyas

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Agreed. She has suffered more than even Karna. By the way, not sure about original M, but many interpretations also hint admiration and attraction between Karna and Draupadi. This is one of the pillars of The Palace of Illusions...

You got it right, Gorab. She was Daisy.

@Aarti- You should read The Painter of Signs. There's strong lady just like Draupadi ;P

Back to Gorab- Ahh..She was kinda boring, you know. I'm not that boring:P BTW, thanks.

Now let me depart from here otherwise this thread (the only pure thread of this group) will be infected:P

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Don't you worry 'bout that Arpit. We're immune to that infection :P

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments The Palace of Maya - What a brilliant essay!!!
Why did Krishna and Arjun burn the Khandavaprastha so mercilessly? This interpretation and possible implications are just brilliant!

message 86: by Rahul (new) - added it

Rahul | 162 comments Yes, one of the essays I was fully convinced by the author's view.

As it comes now and again, the tales are modified to give the heroes a moral edge.

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments chapter on Krishna was also informative... didn't know the significance of "Vasudeva"

on the last chapter now. overall pretty impressed by this book so far.

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Also, couldn't find any insinuations of Draupadi Karna attraction in either of their essays..

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Last chapter (on page 193): About Rajasuya, it is written - "it is comparable to the 'Potlach' ceremony performed by the Kwakiufla Indians."

any ideas what's this?? i only know about 'Potluck' parties :p

message 90: by Rahul (new) - added it

Rahul | 162 comments It is supposed to be a gift giving ceremony in native American tribes. Check out this link : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potlatch

Have you read of anything on how Karna saved Draupadi from Vasuki? (also probably a later addition)

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Don't remem reading it in this book atleast (except last chapter)

Thanks. Now i got another tongue twister from this link : Kwakwaka'wakw!

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Ha ha ha :D
I'm not even sure about syllabus things and you dare to bring up outside syllabus!!! That too when the subject is Mahabharata!!!
You are a true sadist! :P

Rahul | 162 comments Google about the vasuki episode, part of Maharashtra Bhil tribe folklore

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Everybody says its a clear interpolation... not found in Vyasa's epic. See Quora link on this

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Today morning I have finished it.
I have huge respects for this book... will review it shortly.
Had I known about its content, I would have preferred to read it before reading Devdutt's Jaya.

message 100: by [deleted user] (new)

Is it better than Jaya? I was thinking about buying Jaya but as I could not find it online.
