I haven't updated in a while and I'm reading too many books. I seem to keep starting a book, then putting it aside for another read for various reasons, even when I'm enjoying them. I think once I finish my obligations for September, I'm going to go back and finish the books I have started that are just waiting for me to have some time.

currently reading:

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Cursed Child 30% -It's been a while since I've read a play and it took a minute to get used to the format, but it is interesting. I'm happy to be back with some favorite characters and meeting their children.

A Torch Against the Night (An Ember in the Ashes, #2) by Sabaa Tahir A Torch Against the Night 21% - Reading this for a buddy read. So far, it's been good. It has a lot going on and I can't wait to see where the story takes me.

Her Darkest Nightmare (The Evelyn Talbot Chronicles, #1) by Brenda Novak Her Darkest Nightmare 32% - This is one that I was enjoying, but put aside for a challenge book, then picked up others. It is still interesting and I just need to find some time to get back to it. I think this would be a good one to read in one or two sittings if I could manage it.

Others that I started and need to finish:

Hidden Bodies (You, #2) by Caroline Kepnes Hidden Bodies 19% - This is one that I put down a while ago and just picked up again because I had it on the app on my phone. Need to get back to it. Joe is a creepy stalker dude that followed his girlfriend that ran out on him to California. So far, there hasn't been too much going on besides Joe complaining about Californians and not being able to find her. I assume it going to pick up quickly based on what has just happened in the book.

Stars Above (The Lunar Chronicles, #4.5) by Marissa Meyer Stars Above 30% - Short stories that go along with The Lunar Chronicles series. I don't typically love short stories, but this was such a fun series that I really want to read this one. So far, the stories have been good and given some background and side stories of the main characters.

The Murder of Mary Russell (Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, #14) by Laurie R. King The Murder of Mary Russell 14% - Another one that I found interesting, but put aside because of more pressing reads. It's a bit strange to read a story when the main character is killed off right in the beginning. I'm interested to see where the story goes, as it jumped to the past after the murder.

I have four other books that I put aside for various reasons. This seems to be a bad habit I've gotten into. I'll have to make it a point to finish these off.

A few that I've recently finished:

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, #1) by Ransom Riggs Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children 4✭ - I thought this was a very good story and the pictures were an interesting touch. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict The Other Einstein 5✭ - The author researched information that suggests that Einstein's first wife may have been involved with his research and theories, but not given credit for it. She wrote and interesting story around the theory that Einstein's theory of relativity was really his wife's theory. Mr. Einstein is definitely seen in a negative light in this story, so it is not for everyone. I found her perspective to be creative, interesting, and very possible, particularly given the times, though I am definitely looking at it as a work of fiction.

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2) by Sarah J. Maas Crown of Midnight 4✭ - So much better than the first book IMO. I'm hoping that the series is done with the love triangle junk. That really takes away from the story for me. Another one that I plan to continue with the series.

Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly Lilac Girls 4✭ - Told from the perspective of three different women during WWII, not all of them very likable. One is a Polish girl that joint the resistance and is sent to Ravensbrook, a "reeducation" camp for women. Another is a woman that works for the French consulate in New York doing volunteer work that is of great importance to her. The final narrator is a woman that is a doctor in Germany. She has just completed her schooling and wants to be a surgeon, but if pushed into dermatology because she is a female. It is not initially obvious how all of the women are connected, but they are. Definitely worth a read.

Last Rituals (Þóra Guðmundsdóttir, #1) by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir Last Rituals 3✭ - A gruesome murder occurs in Iceland and a German mother calls a lawyer to check on the case because she believes the police have the wrong person in custody. Decent read, but not my favorite. There were a few inconsistencies and a couple of translation issues/ cultural differences that bothered me. Not bad though.

ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (allykennedy) | 1002 comments I finished Missoula Rape and the Justice System in a College Town by Jon Krakauer last night. I gave it 3/5 stars. I really think its disgusting how hard women have to fight to prove their bodies were violated.

I finished Theft of Swords (The Riyria Revelations, #1) by Michael J. Sullivan a few days ago and I liked it. Again, 3/5 stars. Nothing earth shattering, but it served as a good set up for the series. I'm curious to see where it goes.

Currently continuing on with Rise of Empire (The Riyria Revelations, #2) by Michael J. Sullivan which I'm enjoying more than Theft of Swords (so far).

And I'm re-reading the entire Saga graphic novel series.

I'm so so freaking happy my book slump seems to be over.
I blame textbooks as the cause!

I finally finished Her Darkest Nightmare. I gave it 4 stars. The story was great. It had lots of twists and turns and some lovey moments, but there was some repetition, particularly in the romance area, that was annoying and kept it from getting the 5 stars.

message 363: by Angela M (new)

Angela M I've read Shining Sea. 4 stars . My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... This is a family saga spanning decades . Recommended.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading Make Me Love You by Johanna Lindsey Make Me Love You and listening to Apprentice in Death (In Death, #43) by J.D. Robb Apprentice in Death

MMLY is a really good historical romance. Think Beauty and the Beast with horses.

AiD is the latest In Death. This one feels as if it's been inspired by the DC Shooters. So glad to visit Eve, Roarke and the gang again!

Stephanie - Great review. I want to read that one too.

message 366: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 78 comments I just finished reading The Summer Before the War. You can see my review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Somewhere along the line I got the recommendation to read it, but sadly it just didn't stand up to the author's previous book, Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, which I really liked.

Currently reading, The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible. It's gotten mixed reviews (what hasn't?), but I think it's pretty funny so far. I think it could be interesting to read regardless of your religious affiliation. I'm learning a lot while getting some chuckles. :)

I'm currently reading Odd Interlude: A Special Odd Thomas Adventure while we are between Odd Thomas books as a group. It is part of the Odd Thomas series and contains books 4.1 - 4.3. I thought they were 3 short stories, but it turns out that they are 3 parts to the same story. I'm really enjoying this one, maybe better than the others in the series. I have laughed out loud several times. I find Odd to be really humorous and witty at times.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished listening to Calculating God by Robert J. Sawyer Calculating God.

Incredible! It reaches you intellectually and emotionally. What if an atheist scientist gets a visit from an alien who says that God is a scientific fact?

It's no Christian polemic. Very good and makes you think!

Rachel Poynter (rachiesue) | 62 comments I recently finished listening to Yes Please by Amy Poehler and I thought it was pretty good. There were parts that I thought were really funny and parts that I wasn't really into, but overall, I would recommend it to anyone who was looking for a more lighthearted read.

For my book club this month I just finished The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón . I wasn't sure what to expect since it was a Spanish translation, and to be honest the first 150 pages could not keep my attention. Once things started happening in the plot I was really interested and ended up giving it 4 stars.

I also just finished To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee on audio. I haven't read this one in a really long time and the narrator was Sissy Spacek. I felt the same about it now as I've always felt about it, although she did have a good 'Scout' voice.

I'm currently reading When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi , also for my book club. I'm only about half way through but it isn't exactly what I expected before starting. It's pretty short so I should be done with it very soon.

I have finished Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling - I thought it was really good. It involved time travel, which I didn't know and wish I had. I'm not typically a fan of time travel because there are almost always inconsistencies and things that don't make sense. Overall though, it was a good story and fun to imagine it as a play. 3.5✮

I also read Odd Interlude: A Special Odd Thomas Adventure Odd Interlude A Special Odd Thomas Adventure by Dean Koontz as a buddy read. I think it was the best in the series so far. It was a little bit more sci-fi than some of the previous books and had new paranormal aspects. The story was good and it made me laugh out loud several times. I highly recommend this one, if you enjoy the series. 4.5✮

I am now reading The Purloined Poodle The Purloined Poodle by Kevin Hearne 68%, which is a spin off from the Iron Druid series and told from the perspective of Oberon. It is a fun and quick read.

Angela M Finished The Other Einstein. 3 stars . My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... I didn't love this as much as I thought I would . Maybe just me because it has a lot of 4 & 5 star ratings.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading Kisscut Kisscut (Grant County, #2) by Karin Slaughter today. I really like this series. The cases are well plotted and devastating to read about. I really like the two main characters Sara and Jeffrey. However, I can't stand Lena and wish she would get killed off or maybe find religion and join a nunnery.

I am also listening to the latest book in the In Death series, Apprentice in Death Apprentice in Death (In Death, #43) by J.D. Robb . I loved this series and I especially love them in audiobook form. This is one of the few series I will re-read/re-listen and that I don't even read in print at all anymore.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I just finished reading my interlibrary loan, A Thousand Words for Stranger A Thousand Words for Stranger (Trade Pact Universe, #1) by Julie E. Czerneda by Julie E. Czerneda.

I really liked it and found it hard to believe it was her debut. It has excellent characters as well as the wonder and sense of adventure I need in my sci-fi.

I'm reading The Memory of Things The Memory of Things by Gae Polisner just because it came in from the library and I need to return it soon. I'm not sure what I think of it yet. It has a strange format, but I think it will be a fairly quick read.

I just finished:
Mao's Last Dancer by Li Cunxin Mao's Last Dancer - I gave it 3 stars, but it meandered a bit too much for my taste. It had some interesting parts, particularly learning about Chinese culture and life, and some funny parts, but I was also bored at times and just wanted him to get on with it.

An Elephant in the Garden by Michael Morpurgo An Elephant in the Garden - Also, 3 stars, but honestly better than Mao's. It was somewhat interesting, but not really detailed enough. A bit flat, I suppose.

message 388: by Angela M (new)

Angela M I finished Moonglow. 4.5 stars . My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... Memoir, fiction- who knows but highly recommended if you like Chabon.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I read the Odd Thomas short story/prequel Odd Thomas You Are Destined To Be Together Forever by Dean Koontz Odd Thomas: You Are Destined To Be Together Forever as I try to get caught up on the series.

It was sure nice to see Stormy again.

I also started the romantic suspense Close Your Eyes (Kendra Michael, #1) by Iris Johansen Close Your Eyes yesterday.

Alycia (bookhound18) I'm currently reading Sleeping Murder by Agatha Christie (Miss Marple's Last Case).... I always find myself in the mood for a murder mystery in October. So far, I'm loving this one!! It reminds me of 4:50 from Paddington which is my favorite Marple to date.

message 395: by Angela M (new)

message 398: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 19 comments Just finished Dead Scared (Lacey Flint, #2) by Sharon Bolton and it was so good. This is my fave series right now.

Also, I just read her inbetween short story of this series If Snow Hadn't Fallen (Lacey Flint, #1.5) by S.J. Bolton , which was also good but not as good as her full lengths.

message 399: by Vicki Willis (new)

message 400: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished Close Your Eyes (Kendra Michael, #1) by Iris Johansen Close Your Eyes today. I thought it was going to be romantic suspense but it turned out not to have that much romance.

I really liked it and the plot was really good. The characters were engaging and had great chemistry. But, for some reason, no romance.
