thewanderingjew I read Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi , Homegoing
and The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen The Sympathizer.
Both expose periods of history that are shrouded in controversy, humiliation and shame.
Both are excellent.

I just finished The Girl In The Ice and thought it was excellent. A realistic thriller with flawed characters. I figured out who the killer was with the investigator, which is great.

I'm now reading The Fireman, which is excellent. It took a little bit for me to get into it because the dialogue was initially awkward and stilted. I would say that was cleared up by 5% though and it's been great since. It's very suspenseful. I'm a little over halfway through and I don't want to put it down.

I'm also reading The Invisible Library. It's not exactly what I thought it was going to be. It has vampires and fae. Somehow, I thought it was just going to be chasing a thief through different worlds in order to get an important book back. I have had to readjust my expectations, so I still don't have a solid opinion yet. I'm only about 22% through. I'm hoping to read a lot more this week.

Heh, I didn't even know there was such a thing as spider terror but when you think about how many people are scared of spiders it makes sense! :)

message 211: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Lynn - this is about an ancient (10,000 years old) species of spider that comes back. It's horrid! I love a good monster story.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I just started reading the next book (for me) in the P Division series: The Killing Floor by Peter Turnbull. I really enjoy this police procedural series. It's a little hard to keep up with as I'm continually having to request it via interlibrary loan.

This one I got from a library in Henderson, NV.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished listening to Great Expectations by Charles Dickens Great Expectations by Charles Dickens last night.

Finally got around to doing my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I really enjoyed this and probably owe Mrs Oswalt, my 9th grade English teacher, an apology. I am becoming convinced they waste literature on the young.

I just finished The Fireman. It was engaging and suspenseful. Great book. There were a couple of far-fetched parts and stereotypical characters, but they were easily overlooked. I gave it an extra star (5★) for keeping me up at night even when I wasn't reading. :)

I did not finish The Invisible Library. It has great reviews and my GR friends seem to love it, but I just couldn't get into it. After 3 weeks of reading, I had only made it 30% and just didn't care about it at all, so I finally had to just put it aside and move on. So disappointing.

I just started The Murder of Mary Russell (only a couple of chapters in) and so far I like the writing style. It has an old school murder-mystery feel to it.

I'm also working my way through Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town (about 28%). It's so sad what people will do to others and think it is ok. Just heartbreaking what these girls have gone through.

Next up is End of Watch. Can't wait to start it!

Ok, I just looked back at this and of course that's what you meant! lol For some reason, I was thinking the first two in a series and got myself confused. Geez... They were both great reads. Hope you enjoy them. :)

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments It seems like I haven't finished any books in a few weeks and then I just finished 3 in the last two days! Funny how that works.

Under the Bridge The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk by Rebecca Godfrey Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk The true crime book about a 14 yr old murdered by her classmates. Very disturbing.
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Elite (The Selection, #2) by Kiera Cass The Elite Which is a guilty pleasure of mine. Mindless fluff. Kinda like The Bachelor.
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Anatomy of a Haunting The Nightmare on Baxter Road by Lee Strong Anatomy of a Haunting: The Nightmare on Baxter Road A really good haunted house story. Is it true? Not sure, but I wouldn't want to live in that house.
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

All three were 4 stars for me!

Everybody's Fool by Richard Russo

Georgia (glyonhyde) | 15 comments Just finished finished reading Haruki Murakami's 'Hear the Wind Sing'. Well actually, more like finished listening to it. It one of his early story so even more baffling than his tales usually are but no matter how weird his stories are and how crazy the endings, I can't help finding his words therapeutic, calming a and melodious.

Currently reading George RR Martin's 'A Clash of Clan' which I've been on for a while, really enjoy all the action and plot twists but want to finish and stall at the same time because I've grown to love so many of the characters and I don't want to have to say goodbye. That said, there's still a further 5 books to go.

Lastly, listening to Kate Hamer's 'The Girl in a Red Dress'. I'm only a few chapters in and haven't lost the girl yet so not sure how it will pan out, but I like the writing style and the book synopsis about a girl who goes missing but doesn't realise she's lost. Intriguing!

Sameea Just finished Harry Potter And The Cursed Child Last Night. I was a little disappointed with it, I know it's a play, and therefore the script would only allow a limited view of the world of HP and the characters in it, but the plot itself was a let down. I guess watching the play would've been a lot better, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

Nanci | 78 comments Hi all,
I have been traveling out of the country for the last month, but read a lot while I was gone. One I really enjoyed was https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
It's a short little book by Steinbeck, but not his normal genre of fiction. It's a memoir about the time he traveled across the USA. Cleverly written, as only Steinbeck can do, and sure to give you a chuckle or two.
