Kirsten (kmcripn) Finished reading The Importance of Being Alice (Ainslie Brothers, #1) by Katie MacAlister The Importance of Being Alice by Katie MacAlister yesterday.

This is a fun light hearted, funny, and sexy romance! The hero is an author of spy thrillers, the profits of which he uses to try and prop up his huge family and falling down English castle.

Kelly-ann Boyne | 0 comments Here's my brief review...

I can usually wax eloquent about a book that is a masterpiece...but this one is beyond the finite, circumscribed construct of language...tears, silence and reverence are the only appropriate language for this literary work.... Thank you Jennifer Nirven... Here's to Lives without Labels....

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading a cozy mystery, Woof at the Door (Call of the Wilde #1) by Laura Morrigan Woof at the Door by Laura Morrigan. It's a lot of fun about a woman who can hear the thoughts of animals.

Currently reading All the Missing Girls All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda . It is an interesting story, but I'm not a fan of the written in reverse style. It is difficult for me to keep the timeline straight in my head because each chapter is "the day before".

I also just started The Murder of Roger Ackroyd The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (Hercule Poirot, #4) by Agatha Christie for a challenge. Agatha Christie books are often hit or miss for me. I like the way this one is starting out, particularly the voice it is written in.

Let me know what you think of the Christie book after you finish it. It is generally thought of as her best, but I hated it.

I'm going to post this question in a few spots, so I apologize if you have to read it more than once. In July, we are reading Serafina and the Black Cloak. Has anyone read it already? My grandson is visiting and he enjoys listening to audiobooks in the car with me, but I'm wondering if it's too old for him. He's just turning 7. The author answered a question on the book page stating that 8 year olds have read it, but that the beginning may be a bit creepy. I'd love to hear from someone that's read it already. What are your thoughts? Too creepy or ok?

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished reading This Alien Shore by C.S. Friedman This Alien Shore by C.S. Friedman last night.

This is an incredible science fiction epic (500+ pages) written in 1998 that read incredibly fast -- like a thriller, in fact. I only started reading this last Wednesday and finished it last night!

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments I am reading Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) by Hugh Howey Wool Omnibus right now. I am at about 75% and I must say I am surprised how much I am loving it! It was one of those books that I have put on and then off and then on my TBR many times over the last months.
It is very interesting and exciting with lots of Oh No! and Yay! moments. It is about a society of people who live in a silo because they believe the world is uninhabitable. Very good book if you like those types.

Currently reading:
Serafina and the Black Cloak - I don't know what I think of this one yet. I'm at about 22% and I'm listening to the audio. The narrator does a good job, but has a soothing voice and I fell asleep. I'm not sure if it was a slow part in the story or just a combination of her voice and being really tired. lol

The Girl In The Ice - So far, very good. I'm at about 26% and curious as to what happened. I have a theory, but I'm not sure about it. I actually have a back-up theory too, but I'm even less confident in that one. Clearly I'm going to figure it out. ;)

The Invisible Library - haven't actually started just yet, so no opinion. I planned to start this evening, but time got away from me, so it looks like I'll be starting tomorrow.

Just finished:
All the Missing Girls - I wasn't a fan of the story being told in reverse, but I liked the story. It held my interest and had a good ending IMO. I felt that the last 20% was the best part of the book.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd - Another Agatha book that was a bit tricky. I can't say too much about this without giving something away, but I enjoyed this one.

Rachel Poynter (rachiesue) | 62 comments Currently I'm reading 3 books....well listening to 1. I made the mistake of starting two like-genres at the same time and now I remember why I don't do that...but I just couldn't help it! I'm almost done with A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1) by V.E. Schwab and I'm in love with this world. I'm also half way through Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo . I loved the Grisha trilogy, team Darkling til the end, but I'm still unsure about this one. I'm listening to the audiobook and I think that's part of the problem. There are so many characters and so many different narrators that it has really thrown me off. I think that if I had been reading it in print I would have been a little more invested....but I also have an attachment to the previous series and this is in some small way, a spin off. So we will see. I'm hoping to finish it up in the next couple of days.

I'm also starting Magical Mystery Tours My Life with the Beatles by Tony Bramwell for my bookclub for this month. So far I have heard that it's very slow and dry so I'm hoping that it will pick up!

I read Serafina when it was fairly new. I don't know if I would consider it creepy...but then again I'm not 8. The beginning was really the part that I liked the least. My niece just finished it and she was 9 and she enjoyed it. We wondered about that with her, because you just never know, and she ended up reading it during the day and once she was a few pages in it was no big deal!

message 193: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6820 comments Mod
Rachel - I also prefer to read different genres at the same time, but lately I've been reading similar genres at the same time quite often. I need to try to get back to planning it out better.

Thanks for the Serafina tip. A friend of mine said that she thought it was too much for her six year old, but ok for her 8 year old and that it would depend on the kid. I listened to the beginning without him and there was what I think would be a scary part, but then it settled down. I might let him listen to the rest, since the author said the first two chapters are the spookiest.
