I haven't read that one yet, but JoJo Moyes novels are usually quick reads that keep your attention.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I agree, Nanci. I read the Paris for One novella (151 pages) in one sitting!

message 453: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 78 comments Wow! Good job, Kirsten! I'll have to add it to my TBR.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished reading a Group Read for the A Good Thriller group, Stillness (Descent #1) by Eldon Farrell Stillness by Eldon Farrell.

This is a very good pandemic suspense novel. I really enjoyed the characterization.

Loved, loved, LOVED that book!

message 459: by Christina (new)

Christina (dinobrarian) I'm currently reading my ARC for History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera
This is a heavy book in that there is a lot of grief and it is a constant struggle for the narrator as he aims to be okay again. It's like an emotional roller coaster, one chapter is about a happy past and the next is about the current loss. It's beautifully written and has many serious components that teens may appreciate. As an adult, there is some for me as well.

message 460: by Katie (new)

Katie Just finished Victoria by Daisy Goodwin. Really enjoyed it - it is the story of a young Queen Victoria. I usually read contemporary but this was engrossing and a love story. Victoria by Daisy Goodwin

Very powerful book.

I've been on the wait list at my library for that one. It just came in today! :)

Nanci | 78 comments Just finished The Wonder. I really liked it and it seems to be the kind of book where the characters are going to stay with me for a few days. They were so real, I thought they were going to walk off the pages! The storyline about an 11 year old girl who seems to be slowly dying as she refuses to eat for 4 months, was an interesting premise. It's a mystery that kept me guessing to the end, although it's not written like your usual mystery. The plot is slow moving for the first half, as the technique the author uses to reinforce how the girl is s-lo-w-l-y starving. Don't give up on it. The ending is really good.

message 465: by Caro (new)

Caro (bookaria) Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley

I'm currently reading Lily and the Octopus and so far it's wonderful, I'm really enjoying it.

Stephanie - I keep going back and forth on that one! People seem to love it, but the subject matter seems like it may be difficult. It is definitely a story that needs to be told well.

message 467: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I just finished listening to In Such Good Company Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox by Carol Burnett In Such Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox by Carol Burnett

How this one did not show up on the Humor category of the Goodreads Choice Awards, I do not know!

That's excellent! I have two GR friends that have read it and both rated it 5 stars as well. I'll have to see if my library has it, hopefully the audio too.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon Everything, Everything this morning. What a read! I read it in 3 separate sittings! It is so much better than the blurb leads you to believe.

You'll laugh! You'll cry!! You'll wish you could draw like the author's husband!!

I just finished The Poisonwood Bible. I liked the book, but I didn't love it. I thought most of the story was good, but the last 30% felt a bit like an epilogue. The biggest issue I had with it was the narration. I listened to this one and the narrator was really bad. She used the same voice for all the characters, so it was difficult to keep track of who was speaking at times. There was just no distinction, which was too bad because the characters were all very different. Also, she was a bit monotone, so just not good. I think the book would have been better with a good narrator or if I had read a physical copy.

I am currently reading Heartless and Small Great Things. I've only just started both of them, but they are both off to a good start.

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments How funny...
I just finished Small Great Things. I almost didn't read it but am glad I did. It surprised me a few times.
I am also starting Heartless. A new for me author and a promising start.

Oh funny, Vicki! I'm really looking forward to Small Great Things. I was a bit concerned starting a book that is heavy on race issues right after finishing The Poisonwood Bible, which has some similar themes (in addition to many others), but I'm really expecting it to be good.

Glad to see you loved it too, Stephanie!

I loved Small Great Things - though not as much as Leaving Time - it is not nearly as heavy as the book I'm reading right now: The Fixer by Bernard Malamud The Fixer

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've just finished reading the latest Call of the Wilde cozy mystery featuring Grace Wilde, animal behaviorist (who communicates with animals telepathically): Take the Monkey and Run (Call of the Wilde #4) by Laura Morrigan Take the Monkey and Run

This is a really fun series with great characters (animal & human). I highly recommend it.

message 478: by Paula (new)

Paula | 35 comments I've just finished reading The Potato Factory and Tommo & Hawk. I'm ready to start Book 3-Solomons Song of the trilogy by Bryce Courtenay. Fantastic books of life set in London and Australia 1800's. Not for the faint of heart... survival was not easy for poor orphans! Some historical names and places used.

I loved this one too. I've been thinking about it every few month which is a good indicator of how good it was. I need to read the other volumes in the series. :)

I agree. I know a book is good if I keep on thinking about it. This year my mind keeps on going back to The Sound of Glass, Calculating God, and Leaving Time
