Kaje Harper | 17376 comments Members have suggested that it would be fun to do more shared book discussions again. This group has in the past voted for and discussed

a Book of the Month- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

an Author of the Month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

a couple of Reading challenges - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

We have not tried Buddy Reads -- these are led by any member who wants to read or reread a book. They post a thread in a Buddy Reads folder listing the book, and invite other members to read with them. After a few sign up, they pick a start date, read at their own speeds, and discuss and update on the BR thread. Multiple threads could be going on simultaneously.

I have set up a poll which will be also linked in the newsletter later, to see which would be most likely to get participation from our members.

The poll is here : https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

Feel free to add another alternate answer, which will then show for others to agree with. Or you can also comment here. The poll will be open for a week, through May 8th. Thanks for helping us make the group more fun and useful.

Jason (jason_williams) | 732 comments Awesome! Just voted. Thanks for setting up a feedback poll, and for all you do for the group. :-)

Rez Delnava (rez_delnava) I really enjoyed the author of the month when the author was a main part of the discussion (particularly when I got to grill Mia Kerick on her cover choice, or when John Goode wrote a special piece because of something the group prompted). But, the discussions sort of fizzled out when the author wasn't present.

I'd like to see what happens when there is more individual attention between members, so either challenges or buddy reads would be fun to try.

And maybe in the future, we could get authors to host AMA sessions in the group.

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments That's a fun idea - maybe a short session of a couple of hours for people to chat with a YA author on the group (although GR isn't really set up for active chat, I have seen it work fine as long as not too many people were involved.) I'll have to put that into the suggestions list...

John and Mia were great <3

K (k-polipetl) | 4090 comments Just wondering if there is anyway we could perhaps notify an author that they'd been nominated or voted as author of the month - even if not in the group - to see if they'd be interested in joining a discussion.

That said, I do know some authors who would rather not get involved in reader discussions so you'd never be able to get every author involved.

That was so cool to see authors participate in the past discussions. I imagine not every author would participate, but it can't hurt to invite them.

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments I did notify any author who was a group member. Did not try to contact the others. I think if they're not in the group, inviting them to a short fixed time if they're interested might be least burdensome.

It looks like I might start Buddy Reads or 2 Books of the Month first, from the poll, but keep author stuff - possibly a chat time - as another idea to work on. Maybe in conjunction with their BotM.

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments So later this month I'll be setting up Book of the Month voting - we'll see what kind of interest there is. But I already set up the "Buddy Reads" folder here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

I think both sound like fun.

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments We've had some good group reads in the past, so I hope so. :)

CR Daylex (carryingabyss) | 16 comments When will this group start group reads again?

message 12: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments I will put up two threads for the nominations in a few days - one for gay MCs, one for other LGBTQ content - which is what the vote wanted. We'll start reading in July, after we vote on them. In the meantime, we have the "Buddy Reads" folder with two books posted so far that are about to start but still open to join - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Hey, so I started reading Symptoms of Being Human a little late and IDK if this group works that way but is there a specific page we're supposed to be on?

We're not trying to all read it at the same speed - that turns out to be impossible to coordinate - the discussion is open from the beginning. Anyone who hasn't finished is warned that there might be spoilers in the discussion, and anyone who wants to mention a big plot point that might be a spoiler is asked to try to do it behind spoiler tags (see the first post.)

I'm so glad you're joining in. :)
