SOLVED. Children's book about boy who meets playwright/director? [s]

Read this book in primary school, probably between 2005 and 2008. Children's chapter paperback probably aimed at ages 8-15, I'd guess. Not sure what you'd call the genre, but I guess children's 'adventure'.

What I remember is the MC's best friend came from a family of children all named names beginning with R. Friend may have been called Ralph. They or just the MC saw through a gap in the wall of an apartment building into this apartment with old posters from plays and movies. Eventually they met the man who lived in the apartment who was a big playwright or director, and when he died he left his miniature theatre, which had a little model stage and figurines, to the MC.
