The Penguin Lessons: What I Learned from a Remarkable Bird by Tom Mitchell
218 pages

★★★★

In the 1970s, author Tom Michell was walking the coast in South America when he happened upon a Magellan penguin covered in oil and grime, barely surviving. Long before many conservation services or google, he chose to take the penguin home and clean the little guy and thus started the friendship between a man and a penguin.

Let’s just say I’m obsessed with all things penguins. I don’t know where or why my passion for them appeared but I sure do love me some penguins. So when I was wandering the shelves at the library and saw the title, that’s all I needed! And I’m glad I grabbed this one. It’s short and sweet but well done. This goes through more than just the companionship between penguin and man but travel, teaching (he’s a British professor teaching in South America), and life in the 70s. I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and as would be expected, I fell in love with the little penguin known as Juan Salvado. At only 218 pages I ate up this book and was sad to see it end. A book that made my day.

Hahtoolah | 496 comments My husband and I were recently in the Falkland Islands with my aunt where we encountered numerous penguins of several species. My aunt absolutely fell in love with these magnificent birds. This sounds like it will make a perfect book for her. (And me!)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I also LOVE penguins! As an "adult", I still have a set of penguin pillowcases, and a series of penguin stuffed animals I'm keeping for when I have kids.

This one is definitely going on my TBR- how did I never think to look for books about penguins?!

I totally get it! I have a penguin stuff all over our house. My mom still gets me a penguin stuffed animal every Christmas!

This sounds like one I would love. Thanks for that.
