I think it is one reason but not the only one. Writing can help us to come to terms , revisit and help us move on from what has happened. This can then let us put the past behind us and deal with the future positively.

I agree with Frances, it is one reason but not the only one. Also Gordon acknowledges that he was fairly drunk when he made that statement and you get the impression that it is not his opinion when he is sober.
