The second hardest thing to write

At the very end of chapter 18 ("Pact"), Alex writes down some facts:
"8) He should have the right to choose for himself.
That was the second hardest thing I've ever had to write."
Which makes me wonder - what was the first? Did I miss something? I'm so stuck on that detail.

I don't have my copy anymore. Was it perhaps the note he had to write to his mom telling her not to worry when he set off on the final trip? I love how he spent hours on it and he ended up with a ridiculously simple line. Such a sweet book - great narrator!
