Thought we'd do something different for our June group read nomination process. Since in June it's getting to be the start of the Summer aka the hotter days of the year (more or less, depending on where you live), how about our June theme be built around heat. That could be literal heat, as in a hot setting, such as a desert or swamp or African savanna, or it could be a character is in a very 'hot' aka dangerous or risky situation. You choose and let us know which.

All other group read considerations apply.

Considerations:

1. One nomination per group member. The books must be nominated with a Goodreads link by clicking on 'add book/author'. If a book does not have a Goodreads link, it will not be added to the poll.
2. Books need to be readily available, ie, in print (able to buy new or in ebook format).
3. Books should have some degree of action/adventure content.
4. Past group reads are not eligible to be nominated again. The past group discussions remain open for members to comment. You may see the list of past reads here:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

5. Books must be either standalone or first in a series (or they may be later in a series if constructed to be read as a standalone).

The poll will go up on April 30th.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm going to nominate The African Queen by C.S. Forester. This is the book the movie of the same name with Bogart & Hepburn was based on. I know an old classic (first published in 1935) isn't typical in this group, but I'll bet everyone will love it. I sure did & it's not a long book. The heat is both the African equatorial heat & that provided by the Germans.

Steve Martinson I agree with Jim. The African Queen would be a good "hot" read.

have we read The Butcher's Boy ?

If not I'll nominate that. It concerns a kind of "heat" that is applied when "the heat is on" so to speak.

If we haven't and it is nominated, I'll second this one. Definitely one of my top favorites and due for a re-read.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm looking forward to June. All 3 nominations so far are great. We can't go wrong no matter which one wins.
:)

That's one of my top Dirk Pitt reads! Always wanted to see the movie to see how it compared to the book, but never did.

My daughter wasn't thrilled with the flick but I never saw it either.

message 10: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I saw the flick & then read the book a couple/few years later. Big differences, but I enjoyed both.

message 11: by Justin (new)

Justin I'd like to nominate The Flight of the Phoenix
I have been wanting to read for a long time and seems to fit this month really well

Melissa Krueger | 37 comments Wow, I haven't been active on GR in ages, but this thread caught my eye. How about something political for this year's elections? (It doesn't take sides)
