Welcome to all our new members!

Hi Faith! Your books have been mentioned several times in this group. I've only heard good things about them. I enjoyed your short story in Strange Brew. If I wasn't catching up on about 5 or 6 series, I'd already have read the Yellowrock series. They're definately high on my list. I can't wait till I get the chance to read them. :)

Hi Faith! Welcome to the group. Like Lisa MH said, your books have been mentioned in this group and Skinwalker was even voted to be the Group Read Month for February 2010. I, personally, am a fan of your work. :)

Linda (lindyk) | 1 comments Hi everyone, I have been using goodreads since January. Paranormal/Urban fantasy is one of my favorite genres. I love Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assasins, Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson and Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels. Also if you want something a little different than the usual paranormals, try Gail Carringer's Parasol protectorate.

message 406: by Markéta (new)

Markéta (makii) | 1 comments Hi! My name is Markéta (but almost everyone calls me Maki ;)), I'm 16 this month and come from the centre of Europe (Czech republic, anyone?).

I'm full time high school student and also a member of amateur theatre company, where I am responsible for the sound (and I also function as a prompter and anything else that's needed at the moment), so I don't have as much time for reading as I'd like.
It's a shame, since I know I am able to read even 6 books a week while going to school. But that was two years ago. And also I am quite mad at myself that I don't read much even when I have a time. That's also the reason I signed up here today and challenged myself to read at least 50 books this year. I hope I won't dissapoint myself :)

I read lot of different genres, but I love fantasy, supernatural and historical (romance) the most, I guess. I read some books in english to improve my english and also because a lot of interesting books aren't available in czech (e.g. Maximum Ride series by James Patterson).

I hope to discover some new books for me to read and have a good time here! :)

message 407: by Lis (new)

Lis Hi! I'm Lis and I am just finding my way around goodreads and discovering groups and hopefully find a few friends that like the same authors.

I've been re-discovering my passion for reading and have been hitting the UF and PNR bookshelves super heavy for the last couple of years. I prefer series and am looking for some good recommendations which I in turn can push on my book buddy friends. I prefer a little darker adult books, the less romancey style, but I will still read PNR and a YA series too if theres a good storyline.

Some of my Favorites:
Keri Arthur's Riley Jenson series
Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan, the Hallows series
Illona Andrews Kate Daniels series
Kelley Armstrong
Joceyln Drake's Dark Days series
Karen Marie Moning's Fever series
Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series
Charlaine Harris' Sookie series
Richelle Mead's Succubus and Dark Swan series
Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake and Mercy series
Chloe Neil's Chicagoland Vampires
and several more

Currently working thru the Carrie Vaughn Kitty series and Jim Butcher Dresden files, but have taken a short break to read Lover Unleashed from the BDB JR Ward series.

Look forward to your recommendations.

Alisha Jones Hello Everyone!
Hello fellow fans!
My name is Alisha I'm 26 years old and currently in nursing school about to graduate, so excited because yay I will get a job finally and catch up on my reading. I've been in a happy relationship for 4 years who is so understandable of my obsession. My first urban fantasy book was Kate Daniels series since then I was hooked. My personal idol is Felicia Day who made me comfortable to be a public video game girl geek then leading me to goodreads. Super excited about this Nightshift book of the month, I know that she a local author so can't wait!

Scott Robinson (scottbrobinson) | 2 comments My name is Scott and I just joined. I find this such a wonderfully broad category for literature, I had to join. I've just posted some comments on the group's discussion concerning the distinction between paranormal romance and urban fantasy...

I am a writer too and have always been intrigued with aspects of both these literary categories. My latest ebook delves into ghosts, vampires, magic spells etc wholeheartedly...

Glad to be part of this group!

Catherine Jamieson | 4 comments Greetings fellow readers!

I'm a photographer/writer/editor with two published non-fiction books and one in-progress UF novel which may or may not ever get finished.

I read everything - from fantasy to biography. Having spent my twenties reading my way through the Western Canon I have come to the conclusion that literature, with very few exceptions, is a product of its times and it is the *very rare* book which makes the generational leap with success. Lord save us digital agers with instant gratification addictions from Proust :)

I'm a voracious reader, sometimes reading for fun and entertainment and sometimes to understand the marketplace and sometimes because I want to figure out how something is done (or how not to do something).

I am looking forward to talking with you all about the genre.

message 413: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyw) | 20 comments Hi, I'm Tracy and have discovered Urban Fantasy as sort of an early midlife crisis - I'm loving the escape into these magic worlds. I've been making my way through the series with the most books out. So far my faves are The Hollows and Kate Daniels, and I'm currently reading Anita Blake. I love the recommendations found here. I'm really interested in the magic building and like the characters who are mages, witches, wizards, etc. best, but a hot love interest doesn't hurt either.

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 19 comments Hi! I'm Cindy. I joined Goodreads a couple of years ago, but never really did much with my account. I love to read. I'm 54 and have 1 daughter, 1 son-in-law, and 2 grandsons. We all live together with 2 cats! Crowded house - especially when you add in my 800 or so books.... LOLOL

I have always loved to read, and started reading horror books in high school. Stephen King and Dean Koontz were my favorites for years. Once I found Laurell K. Hamilton, I was hooked. I still read the occasional thriller or chick lit, but PnR and UF are my books of choice. I read them all....from YA to Erotica.

I just joined the current Challenge. Last year I read 130 books, so I'm hoping to read at least that many this year too.

I'm looking forward to getting to know ya'll better, and to knowing what books ya'll like the best.

Have you read Blue Moon Rising by Simon R. Green? That was the first book of his that I read, and I haven't looked back since. It's more of a straight fantasy only without the damsel in distress... Well, it being Simon R. Green, everything is reversed, but it is so damn good.

Hi Joel!

We had some discussion about this on this thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

It's around the 20th post that someone mentioned it, and others discuss it. You could comment there, and "bump" the thread back up. I'm sure there are new members who would like to share their thoughts on it.

EDIT - It's comment 18 that starts the topic of authors rating their own work.

Whitney | 5 comments Hi,I'm new to the group. My name is Whitney and I wasn't really into reading until the blow up in fantasy. Then I got hooked. Dang wizards and sparkling vampires. But I've grown beyond them and will try out anything UF. :) I'm still looking for those awesome undiscovered masterpieces.

Whitney | 5 comments Robert wrote: "Hi Whitney, I just joined too. It looks like a good group, so hopefully you'll find what you're looking for! Do you do any writing yourself?"

Hehe. I think I'll have to leave the writing for the experts.I tried my hand in it once but it's harder than I thought. But it does make me appreciate what people who do write do more now. Are you a writer yourself? Or should I answer that by clicking on your profile lol?

message 433: by Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (last edited Jul 04, 2011 07:52AM) (new)

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 19 comments Yes Whitney - he's a writer. I checked! His book sounds pretty good....SIGH....don't have an ereader and I have SO many books here already I keep telling myself it isn't a priority. BUT..... there are SO MANY fabulous books out there that are only in ebook format! Maybe next year.....

OOPSIE! Welcome to the group!

message 434: by Robert (new)

Robert Clear (robertclear) | 8 comments Thanks Cindy! Yep, I can confirm that I'm a writer :) Ebooks seem to be thing of the future, judging by all the buzz around them at the moment. So I couldn't help but jump on the bandwagon myself! :)

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 19 comments Best of luck to you! If you ever get in print, be sure to LMK!!!

Think I should start an ebook WL here....so I don't forget what to buy once I DO get an ereader. It's only a matter of time....

message 436: by Robert (new)

Robert Clear (robertclear) | 8 comments Thanks very much! As it happens my book's available through print-on-demand (on lulu.com), though yet to conquer the big chains :)

As it happens I'm actually a recent convert to ebooks myself.

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 19 comments Thanks for the info. Never ordered from them....I'll check it out!

message 438: by liminal cryptid (new)

liminal cryptid (liminalcryptid) I think I've been mostly lurking on here and stealing book recommendations, so I figure I should probably introduce myself. :)

My name is Lacy Jae, and I'm a 28 year old artist and student in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I love creating in almost any medium, gaming (tabletop, board games, video games), and cuddling up with my monster kitty, Mi-Go, to read. I travel often with my favourite companion, my mom <3 and have been to Australia three times, throughout much of Canada and the US, and hope to make it to Greece and Ireland next spring. I am addicted to art, BPAL perfumes, various awesome tv shows, and horror movies.

I generally tend toward horror/thriller novels, and anything Lovecraftian, but I think my urban fantasy addiction began with Dresden Files and Laurell K. Hamilton's works. I read pretty much anything but straight romance, and really enjoy ancient historical fiction as well. My current love is Seanan McGuire's October Daye series, which I started a couple days ago and am in danger of finishing today. I am always on the lookout for more authors to check out so I'm really glad this group is so full of suggestions. :D

Anyhow, that's me! Nice to finally meet you all. :)

message 439: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenabrahamson) | 7 comments HI Everyone, I'm really new to Goodreads, but I am sooo impressed by each of the groups I've joined.

My name is Karen Abrahamson and I live in Vancouver, Canada (waves over mountains to Lacy Jae. I'm big into writing and photography and travel and I also have cats--two very bad Bengal cats to be exact. Think ADHD destructocats. (But I love 'em).

I'll read pretty much anything, and that includes non-fiction, but I seem to be on a bit of an Urban Fantasy kick. I love Devon Monk's work and Adrian Phoenix's as well. I'll read thriller, mystery, romance and literary fiction as well and I also love YA.

I'm looking forward to reading suggestions and lots of interesting discussions.

Cheers.

I am currently reading The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J R Ward. The last sereies was the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning. But I still think my favorite series is the Vampire Huntress series by L A Banks. That is the most multicultural series Ive read. I hope this helps.

For the LA Banks book it was a hard read with the slang, even with the revised version. It was really cool, but I can never bring myself to continue reading them.

message 447: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Hi! I'm Lauren. I'm fairly new to goodreads but I'm really enjoying it. I just finished school so I finally have time to read as I start life in the real world as a veterinarian. I love fantasy, and especially urban fantasy as of late. I've been enjoying some YA books as well, because frankly I have a lot of unhappy endings in my job and most YA books at least try for a happy ending with less blood shed than I see on an average day. I share my life with a cat, and attempt on a weekly basis to kidnap my mother's dog. In my free time I ride horses, enjoy hiking and kayaking and make big plans to write at least one of the books floating around in my head and on my computer.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Sounds like fun Lauren! Welcome to the group.
