Hi Sally- If you are looking for a few good UF reads you should definitaly look for Seanan Mcguire-October Daye series, Caitlin Kittredge Luna Wilder series and Black London series, Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series, Karen Chance Cassie Palmer series, and Dorina Basarab series, Karen Marie Moning Fever series, Jeaniene Frost, Cat and Bones series-there are more but that should be a good start!

I am also a writer (no published novels yet) and look forward to participating in this group.
I'm currently reading Three Days to Dead by Kelly Meding. And I'm loving it!

Thanks for the suggestions, I will definatelly look into them. I have read Moning's Fever series, it is one of my favorites

I'm still a little confused as to how I became a UF reader - or perhaps I should say that I'm somewhat surprised at how long I've been reading UF. I've been reading PNR books and series for quite a while - I love Lynn Viehl's Darkyn/Kindred series, and Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling books, and KMM's Highlander/Fae series. Then a friend told me I just had to try JR Ward's BDB books, and I've just been expanding from there. I really like MJ Davidson's Queen Betsy books, Harris' Sookie books are OK but not something I seek out (is this where I get kicked out of this group?! **grin**), I've only read one Kim Harrison book, but I really liked Dead Witch Walking and look forward to reading more in the Hollows series. I'm still waiting for my 1st Patricia Briggs book from the library, and haven't yet decided whether or not I want to add Jeaniene Frost to my l-o-o-ng list of authors. But that's why I joined this group - to see what you are reading and recommending. Looking forward to discussing books!

I'm 29, I live in NYC but I'm originally form Poland..I've been a bookworm for as long as I can remember and reading never gets boring :)

For as long as I can remember I used to read about 1 book a day in my free time.
I became acquainted with Jackie Collins and Harlequin romances as well as Harold Robbin's books the Crowd Pleasers and a stone for Danny Fisher and other book by him at the age of 7.
So I know that at 7 yrs of age I should of been reading Judy Blume books. But they didn't interest me at the time. I thank my Aunt's Bookshelf. although I didn't know what some words meant, I still was enthralled by the plot.
From there I became acquainted with V.C. Andrews and others.
I jumped across into the Paranormal world when I came upon Richelle Mead's new release Succubus Blues. from there on I started with Twilight.. Then Susan Sizemore's Prime Series..
Then the rest is history...
I like coming to boards where others share my interests. It's no fun when your friends are not into books the way you are and you can't share the joy and excitement you feel when starting or finishing a book.

I generally read series and especially like series where there is one central character that the books revolve around (e.g. Sookie, Anita Blake, Kitty Norville, Mercedes Thompson, etc.), but that doesn't keep me from enjoying series where the main character changes with each book (I am a huge fan of J.R. Ward's books... including her new Fallen Angels series).
I also like reading anthologies and in the process I have discovered some great authors that are new to me. Plus -- there is always the advantage of reading a short story when my time is limited.
Eva

I love Anita Blake books, particularly Obsidian Butterfly and afterward, and I also like Carrie Vaughn, Patricia Briggs, Devon Monk, Alan F. Troop (not sure if anyone mentioned these but they certainly qualify - dragon shapeshifters with many of the issues of vampirism), Draw One in the Dark, Yasmine Galenorn (only author I'll go to the romance section for), and most of all Caitlin R. Kiernan (much deeper and darker than the rest, not exactly escapist) and Robin McKinley's Sunshine!!

I like classics, my favourite book being Jane Eyre, some biology books and others however I really like the urban fantasy genre but I get sick of people thinking that it is the same as paranormal romance. I do like some PNR but I find a lot of it doesn't focus on the setting and the story behind the romance. Some of my favorite authors in this genre are: Patricia Briggs, Kim Harrison, Isobelle Carmody (although more post-apocylptic fantasy), Ilona Andrews, Robin Mckinley (sunshine is great!), Jeanine Frost, Nalini Singh (guild hunter series), Katie Macalister (Aisling Grey series), Rachael Caine (Weather warden series) and others.

I'm very new to the whole fantasy-genre. I have a brother who is completely into the discworld series and various others, and I've started to listen to a lot of paranormal romance, althrough I generally dislike YA (for some reason I always pick up YA paranormal romance in the summer). I wanted to put my toes in the urban fantasy pool, which is why I joined this group, so that I could follow the books you read here. I'm not all that good with forum conversations or posting reviews or my thoughts and opinions about books, but maybe I'll drop a few lines here and there, who knows, but I do like lurking around >:E

Ive enjoyed reading all my life and started on scary/horror like stories from when I was about 10. After a few years I moved on to fantasy and Ive been into anything magical ever since. It was a natural thing to start on PNR and UF because of it. I love 'exploring' new worlds.
I tend to read quite a lot, a few books a week, though it tends to depend on my mood. I can have periods of months where I barely read anything and then I read 4/5 books a week.
I look forward to chatting with you all, Im always on the lookout for new books to read ^^
Oh hah, forgot to say who my favourite authors are! Jeaniene Frost, Richelle Mead, J.R. Ward, Rachel Vincent, Karen Chance, Kelley Armstrong, Caitlin Kittredge and ofcourse Patricia Briggs!

I think that for a UF to really grab me, it has to be one that makes you never question the setting. Urban Fantasy is what it is because it takes place in our own world, yet manages to separate itself in the same instance with the fantastical elements. If this can be done seamlessly, with no delineation, it will remain on my bookshelf forever.

Other than that I work and drink coffee by the gallon.

Other than that I work and drink coffee by the gal..."
i'm from Texas too

Texas here too ! hey, I drink it by the Gallon too, need more caffine !

My general theory on book selection is if I'm hunting for a new author while in a bookstore, I will generally pick a book with a woman (ideally armed with some kind of weapon) on the cover. If it's got a dude on the cover (particularly showing abs), it's probably Paranormal Romance and not UF! Not a hard and fast rule...but it's served me well for going into uncharted territory!
Top consistent authors for me are Kim Harrison, Ilona Andrews, Jeaniene Frost, Richelle Mead, Patricia Briggs, and Kelley Armstrong. Other authors I definitely enjoy reading but find a little less consistently reliable are Charlaine Harris, Chloe Neill, Jocelyn Drake, Karen Chance, Karen Marie Moning, and J.R. Ward (yeah, yeah...dudes on the covers and definitely PR, but she built a great world with the BDB with many great characters and story lines in each book, humor and kick-ass women which is what I like about UF so she wins a spot on my list)!
Oh and I loved the Harry Potter series! So sad that's gone now. :-(
Looking forward to learning of new authors from all of you!

Now I'm going to catch up on all the discussions!

I really enjoy reading all types of fantasy books I started off with Harry Potter in middle school and now am into more of the urban fantasy, PNR genres. Some of my favorite series are: Cassandra Palmer I love the love triangle, Chicagoland Vampires Merit is awesome and Haven I think the whole cat shifter one second Vampire the next is an interesting premise. Those are just some of my favorites.
thats about it.

My name is Michelle. I am currently an unemployed student majoring in anthropology. I read mostly fantasy, urban fantasy and science fiction books but I will branch out from time to time. I feel the need to mix it up once in a while. Since I am not currently employed I tend to read a lot, however this will probably change once the fall semester starts. This will also depend on me getting a job as I am not able to read as I like to while working. I hope I have introduced myself sufficiently and I am happy to be a part of the group.

I was born in Bosnia but due to the war my family decided to move...so here I am in this rainy and windy Denmark (Europe), and I have been living here for almost 18 years now.
I don't really remember the name of my first book but I do recall how long and hard I cried every night out of sadness for that poor hoarse that died in the last chapter. Since then I have been hooked on reading anything I could get my hands on. With the years of reading I got this habit of picking a genre, topic or a period and sticking with it until I felt there was nothing new in it for me...then I would move on...however when I came across my first UF book...I got stuck...since then I have been coming back to this genre again and again...and AGAIN!!
Besides reading I think it would be fair to say that gaming was my second hobby...and with those 2 hobbies who has time for anything else.
Hmm...don't know what else to say...oh yeah...English is not my first language obviously...not even my second...so please pardon my spelling mistakes...reading and understanding is one thing but when it comes to writing...grammar just turns out to be a killer.

I'm an urban fantasy reader and writer (no novels published I'm afraid). I have quite a hard time getting my hands on a lot of these books because Swedish bookstores and libraries don't stock it, so I might need to pass on a lot of reading. But I'm looking forward to this! I've never been in a book group before so it's all new to me.

Having joined this group, guess it's obvious that I love urban fantasy novels. I'm more into the action, occasional romance (gimme sexual tension between characters any day!), and lore/mythology of the supernatural universes. So, I tend to read more in this genre than paranormal romance. (I don't like chick lit and part of me believes that's what paranormal romance is).
Some favouriate authors in this area: Kelley Armstrong, Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Richelle Mead, Carrie Vaughn (I'm starting to think of them as the usual suspects) . I read YA and adult novels, no discrimination.
If I need a break from werewolves, ghosts, vamps and the like, I tend to read Chuck Palahniuk, Brett Easton Ellis, and I'm loving Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games.
I'm new to GoodReads and slowly finding my way around! :)

My name is Johanna and I found Goodreads only few weeks ago, so I'm still learning how to use the site.
A year ago I really didn't know that I liked UF and PNR. It all started with Twilight saga and Sookie Stackhouse series. After that I discovered J. R. Ward and The Black Dagger Brotherhood. Now I'm obsessed to find more books and series to read within these genres - though I'm still kind of figuring out which book/series belongs to which genre...
I've also started to read my books in english (instead of finnish), so I get to practice my english at the same time! Unfortunately this means that I usually have to order my books from bookstores or internet.
Anyway... I'm really REALLY looking forward to learn more about urban fantasy!

My name is Krysta, and I got hooked on the paranormal scene about 7 years ago when I was introduced to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.
Some of my favorite authors now include Kim Harrison and Charlaine Harris, as well as Nancy Holder and Christopher Golden's Buffy novels.
Some books on my to-read list include Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake Series and some more Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles novels.

Those two did the best Buffy novels! I read all I could find. :)

I REALLY want Spike and Dru: Pretty Maids All in a Row.
Robert Joseph Levy also did a really good job on Go Ask Malice: A Slayer's Diary. That and Nancy Holder's Carnival of Souls are two of my favorites.

I read the Pretty Maids All in a Row. It was good (it had Spike and Dru afterall, how could it not?), but the Gatekeeper Trilogy is my favorite by Nancy Holder and Christopher Golden. Child of the Hunt is another really good one too. I haven't read the Go Ask Malice. I tried several other authors who wrote Buffy, and so many were only so-so that I stopped reading anyone but Holder and Golden. If I ever find that one, I'll give it a try. :)

My name is Jo Anne I just moved to NC and Hubby and I love it here. I love paranormal and urban fantasy so much that I am writing one myself. I belong to RWA and Carolina Romance Writers. Just joined the group and wow they are great. I do miss my old group from Albany NY.
So here I am, looking forward to finding new authors, and hopefully coming up with some new ones for the group.

I haven't been able to find Pretty Maids All in a Row anywhere!
I'll probably have to end up getting it online somewhere.
I haven't read the Gatekeeper trilogy.
There are still SEVERAL Buffy novels I haven't read though.

Sadly, I think most, if not all, of the Buffy books are out of print. I haven't seen one in a store (except the graphic novels) in years. TV series spin offs don't seem to stay in print long. I was surprised that my library still had a couple. Getting them online may be the only way to go. :(
If you do find them tho, the Gatekeeper Trilogy is amazing. It happens during 3rd season, which is one of my favorite seasons. The books are Out of the Madhouse, Ghost Roads and Sons of Entropy.

Thanks!
I'll keep an eye open for them!
Season 3 was my favorite too. Followed closely by 2.
